No . You can use your original throttle cable and just make up a bracket for the lokar kickdown cable. I havent installed mine yet. I still have the old rod set up but thats going.

Some times you can get the decal on without removing the needle, but if you do, the two pieces of soft wood and two small screwdrivers either side and it should pries off.

Sorry, after looking closely at the pictures, I noticed your kick down rod looks bent, and the adjustment screw, captured nut and return spring for the kick down lever on the carb is missing.  Those parts come with a new carb.  There should also be instructions.  You can also buy them separately from Holley or Summit Racing or Jegs.
    1)  At idle with the rod connected to the lever on the carb, that lever should NOT be in a fully forward position.
    2)  If the adjustment screw and other missing parts were installed on the carb, and your rod not bent, initially you turn the adjustment screw so that when at wide open throttle the kick down rod is in its fully rearward position.  Fine tune after driving but make certain you can always get full throttle.  After that is done, you will notice, at idle the rod and lever on the carb will NOT be fully forward.  You typically have to be at roughly 1/2 throttle before the throttle lever contacts the missing adjustment screw on the kick down lever and starts to move the kick down rod.
You can go the Lokar route.  But you are simply missing a few adjustment parts on the carb and your kick down rod looks bent.
Look at Bob and Sue's photos.  Theirs is set up correctly.  The missing kick down lever adjustment screw and captured nut goes in the hole at the very top of the kick down lever on the carb.  The green lever on the carb contacts that screw when opening the throttle.  Simple arrangement.

bigmal, I agree with you. The part that gets me the most is you spend a decent amount of money for someone to do a job and everything is fine at first. In my case the problems started popping up almost six months later. Paint started bubbling and seams with way too much filler started cracking. As with you I've learned a lot too. I'm starting to tackle things I would not have done on my first Mustang. This past week I was all set to ship  my car back to another body shop to repair my A-pillar but decided to go at it myself. Unfortunately I found more rust that needs attention.

I think I'm heading towards the 7th year of my ownership. It's been an on and off thing, mostly off. I've only purchased parts when I have had money to do so and that doesn't happen too often.
Here I am in Louisiana getting into in for the first time along with the previous owner. It's the only time I have ventured out on the road in it.
Thanks, Mal. I actually feel like the light at the end of the tunnel is starting to appear.

Just noticed in your 1st pic compare to mine it looks like you have the wrong kick down assembly on the carb, look at Holley's site I think you need a Ford Kick Down Kit like this one.

I'd say you need to find a new or used kick down rod, yours may not even be the right one for a Mustang from the looks of the bend by the firewall.
Here's my setup I just took these only difference is the Dominator manifold.

try to bend it so it is just at its full stop when the throttle is wide open. it also can not stop against the intake manifold as this may keep the rod from returning all the way.

You may need to have an elongated slot, so the accelerator linkage only comes in contact with the rod towards the end of its travel to operate the rod, my vette is like that.

I got told "there is no rust in this car" too, Mal. About 7 years and double my initial investment later, I'm still rebuilding.

After i sold my springtime yellow 69 mach 1,i never really thought about getting another one ,untill i saw an old 69 at a friends shop .It had been painted several times ,the paint was peeling and it had black ,brown and grey primer all over it ,the front fenders were beat and the hood ,motor ,transmission and all the suspension was gone, but the body was in great shape. I always wanted to build a Shelby replica ,and i mentioned it to my friend .He told me ,if i would sand blast a couple of cars for him it was mine.Didnt even have to think about it .
i loaded up the first two cars belonging to my friend an took them to my shop.I went back for the 69 and put a rear end and front dolly under it so it would roll and loaded it on the trailer.
When i got it to the shop i started to notice things ,the engine compartment painted red,the black out painted along the rockers...yep,it was my second 69 i sold back around 1980 ,checked the vin and confirmed it.Digging through the car i found one of my registrasion papers ,it will never be sold again without some sort of force. I just wish i would have taken a pic the day i brought it back home.
