Boss302

the unknown

Recommended Posts

ive had a 96 cobra,94, even a 89 5.0 for a short while..

im not an expert on these, just what friends/family tell me. as im learning more.

Now, its a 69 grande...bored boss 302, from a trusted long time friend. that was pretty much all done, except for some fresh paint and new interior.

traded one of my 88 silverados for it...sounds and runs great.

4months later after the interior was replaced and new tach and radio

and im starting to get parts to help stop leaks...tighten up bolts and other stuff..

but recently i had my friend put it on a lift so i could drain oil and replace the filter, he noticed the Output shaft seal was bad and needed replaced.

i thought it would be normal, find,order,relpace..

but it wasnt.

i looked on the vin, it states engine code "F" (210-v8) and not G for 290-boss302

friends say its a boss302...it feels like a 290/300hp car.

so that leads me to believe the Vin Plate is false.

its correct on the type, which is hardtop (grande)

i was trying to get the correct output shaft seal, when i started looking into this.

Though my friends are good with cars, they arent classic mustang experts.

the person before my friend had it, was restoring it, so he probably modded it..changed it..etc

Is there a Hidden VIN# plate somewhere, so far its just the inside of the engine bay on the side.

I want to learn and see exactly what this is...i dont have access to my friends lift all the time. but maybe if anyone can point out any other places the VIN can be...or how to tell what the tranny is exactly and anything else.

thanks for any info you leave.

Have any pics of the engine?

69 hardtops didn't come with the boss motor so it wouldn't have a G. So unless a boss motor was transplanted in the car its a regular 302 engine. I've seen it many times when non ford guys think every ford 302, especially 4 barrel versions, are Boss 302 engines. Boss 302s have 351C style heads with different coolant passages and engine specific intake plus numerous internal upgrades.

I'm going to bet the vin plate is correct. So the plate on the dash matches the stamping on the drivers top inner fender?

Identifying a Boss 302:

1: Find the freeze plugs --- if they are pressed in then it's not a

BOSS 302. If they have a large square indentation in the middle of what looks like a giant set screw, it's a start.

2: Check if there are 8 bolts holding down the valve covers. Next, check the radiator hose inlet at the top of the engine. If it enters the manifold it's a BOSS 302. If it enters the block, it's a Cleveland.

You can get 300 hp out of a 2 bolt main 302 with few but matching mods. The Boss was more stout for longevity and high revving for Transam racing. Under 3k rpm you wouldnt know a whole lot of difference between a warmed over 302.

i couldnt see any freezeplugs, but its not on a lift right now.

The guy before my friend said he bored it outs so maybe .40 or something

after i get the correct parts for it, seals and lube it up and stuff ill take it to a dyno and test it.

thanks for help and what to look for...you hit the nail on the head how the non ford guy thought of what it was....but he helps out alot so i didnt argue.

ill post the dyno results when i get everything done

It's most likely just a warmed over 302, hopefully the original engine. Nice looking project and welcome to the club! ;-)

Is your car a regular coupe or a Grande? Grande was an upgrade package available on the coupes. Your door data plate should be able to tell you. I don't remember which it is. Either the 3rd and 4th digits in the VIN or the Body code on the door tag. You can go here to decypher your tags.

M/C

EDIT: The VIN would be 9x01 indicating a coupe (the 'x' is F, R, or T denoting where it was built). The Body Code would be 65x, where 'x' is A-E. A is a standard coupe. B had a luxury interior. C had a bench seat. D had a luxury bench. E was the Grande option. Hope that helps.

Should I change your user name from Boss302 to this now? :001_rolleyes:

He he he, that's just funny right there.

Truth is there are hundreds of thousands of BOSS owners out there, just ask em! Lol

I have one too but not sure what to do with it.

thanks...

This is All Original, matching numbers NO rust....and my friendship is the same.

this is the GRANDE version, i like the trunk space, unlike my 96 i had, small tiny trunk...

Its PRIMER right now, im driving it as of month ago...she runs great, no issues at all, the right muffler actually fell off, rust got to it, so now it sounds 10x louder then before, it was loud but muffled, but now...just @ 800rpm idle, its loud, just sitting at the traffic light and everyone is looking..oh well, no issues from the cops..yet

but..does anyone know what this sender unit was originally used for? its dried...no residue.....i was thinking of trying and installing a aftermarket water temp gauge there, the in-dash gauge works, but i want to see actual numbers and not the Words "TEMP" and its at the "E" all the time

....i just want to ask before i do something foolish...doesnt look like a water SU... i remember seeing one before...

i believe that's a temperature controlled vacuum port.

if you want to hook up a different sensor for a temp gauge, there should be a port in the intake manifold (not talking about the water neck like you are pointing to) where the sensor currently is.

My first car was a 73 coupe with an inline 6. I can't count how many people asked if it was a Mach.

Stick around here and a few other select sites long enough and you'll be the Mustang expert in your circle of friends in no time. :)

So the STOCK in-dash gauge for the original water gauge reads fine, it says TEMP, with the needle idling/running at or right on the "E" of the word TEMP. it runs fine no Issues...

THAT sensor is tapped into the intake manifold, the FRONT on the drivers side.

I bought a new gauge cluster, OIL PSI,TEMP,VOLTMETER, the old one ..well it wasnt hooked up right..he left the project in the middle..who knows...

i was looking around the engine some more...and saw the other hole with a hex nut in it, back of engine on drivers side..i thought thats a good location for the Aftermarket gauge for the temp

heres my question:

having 2 temp sensors, shouldn't affect anything...im sure of that..

but...wont ONE read hotter/cooler then the other...

then..which one would be more accurate, the one in the Back of the IM or the Front of the IM

ive included a pic of the one in the back.

That's not a plug in a coolant passage. That's a vacuum port on an intake runner.

dangit'

Is there another spot i could plug in a secondary coolant temp sensor?

...i thought there were 2...

the stock sensor is being used (front near driver side)

im going to move this to a new thread.
