Raven R code 281 Report post Posted July 3, 2016 Hi All, I yanked my motor a few weeks ago. I don't have plans on taking any further apart except to do new gaskets. My question.....what have you guys done to clean the engine to prep for paint? My thoughts were to degrease then soda blast the outside. Is sandblasting an option(with all open ports sealed up)? Thanks!
jholmes217 65 Report post Posted July 3, 2016 I used engine de-greaser a couple times, then used a pressure washer on mine before rebuilding. I did a rebuild though. It went to the machine shop after I pressure washed it. Might be too much if you are just doing new gaskets.

ray1970 88 Report post Posted July 3, 2016 Sandblasting is a bad idea in more ways than one. as barnett has posted degreaser and a little time is your best bet.

RPM 1,190 Report post Posted July 4, 2016 Coming from a guy who had the entire body soda blasted, I'd use degreaser, stripper, and acetone on Scotch Brite pads. 1 Raven R code reacted to this
Raven R code 281 Report post Posted July 4, 2016 Ok.....I'm off of blasting. I'm gonna look into wire wheel and scotch brute pads after degreasing. Any recommendations for a paint that sticks and won't burn off? I was looking a dupli-color ceramic paint.
jholmes217 65 Report post Posted July 4, 2016 I haven't heard of a paint yet that won't burn off of the exhaust ports area of the FE heads. I have heard of folks powder coating them, but have not heard a follow up of the results. I did Dupli-color on mine, and after about 200 miles, the exhaust ports are turning a darker color. ray1970 88 Report post Posted July 4, 2016 (This is your subconscious speaking) The motor is out why not put some of those cool looking aluminum heads on it.. dont have to paint those. Maybe a little more bore and stroke would be ok. Maybe EFI would top this off nicely??? (Your finance directer)You spent how much on a can of paint?? barnett468 418 Report post Posted July 6, 2016 if you install aluminum heads, you will also save some money on paint.
