Raven R code 281 Report post Posted October 10, 2015 Hanging a factory fastback quarter panel. The pillar to roof seam is in question. Is this a seam that should be re-leaded again or have people had good luck (and longevity) with regular filler?
det0326 179 Report post Posted October 10, 2015 I leaded mine back then skimmed with filler worked fine but if I had to do over I would do as some others I have seen. They actually welded the seam solid then welded in a patch to fill most of the crater then body filler. If you do lead it it is not that difficult but I just think the patch would be stronger. Just my opinion tho. Dave

If we had to do it all over again, we would have plug welded and then fitted and added a patch panel. Leading is not hard, it just takes a lot of time and patience
MustangBobby 28 Report post Posted October 10, 2015 Lead was used because there wasn't the quality fillers there are now. You would be fine to use a fiber reenforced filler as long as everything is prepped correctly and you don't exceed the recommended thickness of the filler. Do not use regular plastic filler (bondo). I would recommend as the others have, to just weld in a little patch to fill the area, and then proceed with regular filler.
mustangstofear 608 Report post Posted October 10, 2015 we have pre made laser cut patches that we weld in. Once their welded in we go over it with a coat of Fiber Tech, then just a coat our regular bodyfiller.
mauleta 10 Report post Posted October 11, 2015 Just leaded mine on both sides using Eastwood's "non-lead" body solder kit. It was actually pretty easy, and with a skim coat of filler to smooth it out, it came out pretty good, I think.
Rsanter 152 Report post Posted October 11, 2015 I would no longer use lead. If it was me I would either use an epoxy based filler. Do not use any sort of regular filler. The other thing I have done is to cut a piece of sheetmetal and weld in a filler piece, grind smooth and then you can use a regular filler to smooth things out Bob
