to lead....or not to lead, that is the question

Recommended Posts

I leaded mine back then skimmed with filler worked fine but if I had to do over I would do as some others I have seen. They actually welded the seam solid then welded in a patch to fill most of the crater then body filler.  If you do lead it it is not that difficult but I just think the patch would be stronger. Just my opinion tho.

I agree with Dave, My brother and I plug welded both of his new quarters and then leaded them in. If we had to do it all over again, we would have plug welded and then fitted and added a patch panel. Leading is not hard, it just takes a lot of time and patience

Lead was used because there wasn't the quality fillers there are now.  You would be fine to use a fiber reenforced filler as long as everything is prepped correctly and you don't exceed the recommended thickness of the filler.  Do not use regular plastic filler (bondo).  I would recommend as the others have, to just weld in a little patch to fill the area, and then proceed with regular filler.

I would no longer use lead.

If it was me I would either use an epoxy based filler. Do not use any sort of regular filler.

The other thing I have done is to cut a piece of sheetmetal and weld in a filler piece, grind smooth and then you can use a regular filler to smooth things out
