Glenn83 19 Report post Posted February 17, 2015 Hi has anyone who is running a mach 1 scoop made a cut out out in the hood to suit a high rise manifold like a vic jr so the air cleaner kinda sits up in to the scoop?? If any one has some pics from the under side of the hood would very helpful. Glenn 1 Ronaldbaf reacted to this
Ridge Runner 1,113 Report post Posted February 17, 2015 Some stock hoods had cut outs under the scoop but it was four separate openings ,With the center cut a carb would fit through but i don't think there is enough room for most air cleaners to fit inside the scoop. Maybe one of those triangle air cleaners ?
72Pstroke 10 Report post Posted February 17, 2015 I cut the hood on my car a long time ago. A 10" diameter air filter will fit inside the scoop, but there isn't a whole lot of extra room. Tim
Pakrat 1,043 Report post Posted February 17, 2015 Mine is open too but I don't have anything sticking up into it, I use a smaller lid on the stock base and have a seal on it to the underside like the old Ram Air set ups.
FrozenMonkey 12 Report post Posted February 18, 2015 I've been on the wall about cutting mine to allow air to escape, rather than enter. Ram air effect at any sort of speed my car goes is negligible. Would like to help the engine cool more since I have been battling hard hot starts.
Pakrat 1,043 Report post Posted February 18, 2015 Because I don't have lights in the back on my scoop I have thought about separating that section off from the front so the hotter under hood air can escape out the back, not sure yet as I have also heard it can grab colder air from the windshield instead of the front like a cowl hood does. I did it all mostly for the cool factor anyway. When I took my car apart I found that the hood had already been cut, looked like it was the size of a shaker actually. The previous owner filled the hole with plexi then put the scoop over it and insulation on the underside so it was a bit of a surprise find.
1969_Mach1 333 Report post Posted February 18, 2015 I have seen posts in this forum where somebody fit a small oval air cleaner into an opening under the Mach 1 hood scoop. Before you try to fit a small air cleaner into that opening you might want to at least search through K&N's tech section on suggested filter sizes. K&N has a simple math formula that I'm sure was developed empirically through testing to determine minimum sizes for their filters. You would probably be surprised how large the filter needs to be. I only mention this because sometimes the minimum requires size gets overlooked.
shaun071 62 Report post Posted February 19, 2015 Just a thought Glenn, maybe have a look for under hood photos of Allan Moffat's Mustang? I'm pretty sure he had the scoop set up for cold air induction, running quad Webers or a Holley 4bbl.
Pakrat 1,043 Report post Posted February 19, 2015 You made me curious so I had to look it up, this was the only clean shot I found. You can barely see some light in the back of the scoop but appears to be cut right to the scoop studs.

sportsroof69 13 Report post Posted February 20, 2015 And since it was brought up, I have made many many passes with, and without the air cleaner, and there's measurable difference in lower either way.

Pakrat 1,043 Report post Posted February 20, 2015 So while on the subject here's a question I always had, were flappers that opened to let cooler air in at WOT more about gimmick or was there little to no or even negative effect at cruising speeds? I would think cooler air would always be welcomed but some flapper systems are rather complicated if they do nothing other than keep the elements out at anything but WOT. sportsroof69 13 Report post Posted February 20, 2015 Goodness, I just re-read my post about the air cleaner. I'll try it again to clarify, since I'm past being able to edit it. I've made many passes with, and without the air cleaner, and there's NO measurable difference in power either way. It ET's and traps the same. Next time I think I'll put the bottle down before I hit post. Lol
