michael2938 24 Report post Posted March 31, 2014 (edited) I thought I would post a few pictures of the 1969 Sportsroof my father in law and I are restoring for me. We picked up the car almost three years ago and it was a project car that had been passed on from at least two previous owners. The car was an absolute mess with some very bad body work done on the car. The car officially went into his shop for us to begin work last November and is almost ready for paint now. :w00t: Here is what it looked like when I got it. I'll post current pictures a little later tonight. Not really sure what the previous owner was thinking with the quarters, but needless to say they both got replaced. 69NC 21 Report post Posted April 1, 2014 (edited) Can't wait to see the after picts! That reminds me of mine when I started. The PO had set the floor pans and used caulking and pop rivets. Edited April 1, 2014 by 69NC
69stanggt 10 Report post Posted April 1, 2014 I bet they tried to replace just the rusted sections of the quarters to avoid complete replacement. As you say, some poor quality work done previously. Can't wait to see pics of current state. :thumbup1:
michael2938 24 Report post Posted April 1, 2014 Can't wait to see the after picts! I see the steering wheel is on the right, are you down under? No, that's just an odd camera angle since the steering wheel is on the left. I'm in Indiana near Cincinnati. I bet they tried to replace just the rusted sections of the quarters to avoid complete replacement. Yeah, and I think on one side they were afraid of cutting out the hole for the side scoop. Either way two brand new quarter skins were ruined in the process. Oh well, its all better now. :thumbup1: -Mike
RPM 1,190 Report post Posted April 1, 2014 Welcome aboard! Before and after pics, nice. We see a lot of before and during pics here. Another sports roof! I think we just took the lead :) Bob
michael2938 24 Report post Posted April 1, 2014 Here are some pictures of what it looks like now. They aren't quite in order and this doesn't even show all the metal that was repaired.
michael2938 24 Report post Posted April 1, 2014 The hood still needs some work. Not the latest pictures of the doors, but they weren't in too bad of shape. Corners have been fixed and they are primered and set aside waiting for paint. I restored the clock panel. It's not perfect, but it was cheap and it'll work for now. The inside of the trunk has been painted, but until it warms up more that's all. Paint color is gulfstream aqua.
69NC 21 Report post Posted April 2, 2014 Looking really good. The color will be amazing! It's great to see these cars get saved. you Father in law and you have some skills.
Tgriffin91 27 Report post Posted April 2, 2014 Looks to me like you bought a new dynacorn body and ditched the one in those first pictures. Would be a good april fools joke afterall. Very good work though. It's amazing how it can transform like that.
michael2938 24 Report post Posted April 2, 2014 Yeah, this car would not be where it is without his skills. He's been doing the welding/body work and I became an expert in sanding and paint removal. :) I've also been restoring and painting smaller pieces in my basement and getting everything ready to put back on the car while he is finishing up the hood and fenders. Hopefully by next week or after the body will be painted. We'll see. -Mike
Burn 14 Report post Posted April 2, 2014 Looks good. Are you going to fix the hood or find a replacement?
michael2938 24 Report post Posted April 3, 2014 Looks good. Are you going to fix the hood or find a replacement? Yeah, the plan as of now is to fix the hood. Since I have a shaker for the car I will need a shaker hood, so the hole for that will get cut out as well. This hood was found standing in a junkyard with several inches stuck in the mud. The hood I got with the car was a mach 1 hood with the hood scoop. That one will also get restored and hung in my garage in case I ever decide to get rid of the shaker. Here's another view of the hood damage. This is the end that was in the mud.

michael2938 24 Report post Posted May 24, 2014 (edited) Progress update. All of the gulfstream aqua has been painted. I posted a few different views of the doors to show the color. This is the same hood as the earlier pictures. I didn't get any pictures of the underside so I will post those later. Still need to paint the blackout on it once we figure out the right measurements. 69stanggt 10 Report post Posted May 25, 2014 (edited) That was some SERIOUS sheet metal repairs to that hood! :w00t: Some very fine work. Impressive. Really like that rear frame rail repair. Now for some inspiration for that rear axle housing........ That looks very nice! I doubt mine will end up looking that smooth with all the rust it had on it, but it should clean up nice. It's all taken apart now and should be painted and back together in a couple of days. -Mike
michael2938 24 Report post Posted May 25, 2014 (edited) Here are a couple more of the hood. The top came out great and underneath is not perfect but the worst of it will be covered by the hinges anyway. I also have a spare hood ready if I ever decide to take the shaker off. Milestone achieved: first piece of trim put back on the car! Edited June 17, 2014 by michael2938
RPM 1,190 Report post Posted May 25, 2014 Looks very nice! "Still need to paint the blackout on it once we figure out the right measurements." You had the measurements on the non shaker hood prior to primering it. Bob

I have them written down somewhere, just need to compare that to the correct measurements.
michael2938 24 Report post Posted May 27, 2014 (edited) Spent today wet sanding and polishing the doors before hanging them on the car. They fit pretty good for a 45 year old car that had the rocker panel bashed in at some point in its previous life. michael2938 24 Report post Posted June 16, 2014 Rear end has been completely gone through and is almost done. Looking for another brake drum. Taillight a and rear quarter extensions are in: Gas tank is in and we turned the car upside down to work on fuel lines and put in the headliner insulation. Last, got the door handles, locks and side scoop fitted in. Not real happy yet with how the side scoop is fitting so there may be more work to do here. -mike
