1969 Mustang GT2 project

Recommended Posts

Some fresh pics of the cold-side all mocked up. We decided to keep it cool and out in the fresh air. If this was a drag car we'd stay in the engine bay but give it 30 mins on the track and it'll be all heat-soaked under there.

Gotta love those Brembos too. :tongue_smilie:

The underside is also finished but no pics. A very unique way of cross bracing and providing torsional strength as well as a mounting point for the torque arm! It's a special CPR thing that they dont want published to much.

Whew, seems like the car has been at SoCal Paintworks for an age, but they ARE hard at work! :001_huh:

When stripping they found a "repair" on the rear qtr by some previous owner. Looks quite a bit better now!

We had to cut the tunnel to get both the T-56 and some special reinforcements in place underneath so new tunnel is being fabbed:

Primer & block sanding again and again. Glad its not my garage...

Meanwhile I'm busy on the carbon parts. Here the hood scoop being molded as a positive layup instead of a mold. I was trying to save time and this is the first time I've done it with clear carbon and no gelcoat. Jeez, the hours spent on clearcoating and sanding that thing! The front spoiler and splitter are a bit more rough finished thank god.

Wax on, wax off. Getting the original ready and slick:

2 layers of black glass:

th_2009_0112_215510.jpg

One layer carbon:

th_2009_0114_204906.jpg

Rough part ready for a zillion layers of PU clear filler and sanding:

Filled and sanded, ready for PU clear coat finish:

th_2009_0222_134837.jpg

Inside getting some stiffening with Airex foam core and carbon over it:

th_2009_0222_134901.jpg

FINALLY done!

Wow, I just came accross this page and realized, holy crap, thats the same GT2 that is in Richard and Dustin's shop here in San Diego.. Ive been drooling over this thing every time I walk in and say hi.. First off, those two guys are awsome, they do great work and are probably the most honest shop in San Diego. Second, the turbo and tubing in this thing are crazy.. Its almost frankenstein-ish.. I love what they are doing to it and I really like your instrument panel too.. Keep up the good work man!

Thanks! And cudos to Dustin & Rich for sure, a pleasure to work with and real honest guys. Crucial when I'm all the way in Europe.

Car is back from SoCal Paintworks in primer and now its the finishing stretch.

Here some of the hard work they put into it:

Ready for serious finishing:

hey sonic, what kind of grill you gonna go with? im going for the same look, just 2headlamps. i like how they look with out the highs, plus, all other 69's have them, so i just wanted to be different. ive been cruising with just2 for over a year now and people always ask if they got stolen. i was thinking of a black powder coated mesh grill but i havent had time to make one. whats your plan?

Thanks guys!

The grille is bent from a sheet from customcargrilles.com, pattern is called XXL Hexagon and we're going to powdercoat it black. I made a 2D drawing to work from if you need it, but basically you bend over the original plastic piece.

I was worried about heat soak under the hood and also wanted to reduce front lift even more, so Dustin at CPR and Bob from SoCal Paintworks made some inverted louvres in the hood. A real pain as its all double layer under there and any heat makes it warp. Cant press directly into the hood but needed to weld in a separate piece. Came out great after some bending back in shape!

I guess I need to get out there and check it out in person again.. I saw it about 2 weeks ago.. Still amazed at the size of the turbo.. When do you ship it out??

Dustin and Rich got my Intake and carb for me in like 3 hours from the time I called.. I've got the CPR Street Machine decal in the rear window of my coupe and its not coming off any time soon. the help from those two have made my build a lot easier, thats for sure..
