It came out of Tampa. Not the best pre-purchase inspection. Bought it in September 15 and it arrived in Aus February 16. Even though the rust wasn't identified I still would have bought it as the price was right and I enjoy what I'm doing. At the end I will have something exactly how I want it.

Something unexpected just happened. Absolutely wrecked and called it a day. Went upstairs and wifey had filled the spa bath with redox and handed me a schooner of bourbon. It doesn't get any better than this. Seriously if I wasn't already married to her I'd marry her.

New bits going in instead of cutting old out is always a great feeling. Making progress now!

Mate sounds like my wife, just relax with that schooner cause tomorrow another day.
Easier with the two piece torque box.

I know the feeling, when you remove the firewall its like the point of no return. i made my own from sheet metal otherwise you can end up with a patch work quilt. I believe from what I have read that the 69/70 year is a lot easier that other years because the dash parts are removable. ;-)

From memory there were 3 spot welds on each fold.

bigmal reacted to Ash in Converting my 69 Mach 1 to Right Hand Drive - Australia
Yes, that's what it is, Mal. There are two vertical folds on both sides, left and right, where the gearbox cross member is spot welded internally to the frame rail. Not easy at all.

Big day Mal,going hard at it.

Mine did that too when I removed the bar. But I've read that it is pretty common and some do it a lot more.
A mates XP was repaired the same way and he's having all kinds of fun cleaning it out.

bigmal reacted to LiLMike in Convex Mirror
Check out what I just received. I haven't installed it yet but held it up to the passengers mirror and it really widens the blind spot. It makes a world of difference. It glues in with silicone. You can place it over the existing mirror or break out the old mirror and glue it on the original bracket. I think I'll just place it over the existing mirror. They say you can't use it on the drivers side and I was curious. Come to find out the mirrors are different sizes. I never knew that. The drivers mirror is larger that the passengers mirror. Who would have thunk? I got mine from MPD. Here is the link. https://www.npdlink.com/store/products/glass_assy_outside_racing_mirror_convex-183515-1.html

You'll definitely prove that guy wrong! A month is a little bit ambitious, but it can be done if you have the time. But that guy who said it will take you 2 years... yeah, that's definitely not true. I can't wait for new pictures of your progress! Good luck, mate!

Thanks Ash,
I've added the link to my favourites and will have a look over the weekend. You had me going with the wife liking your welding unitl I finished the sentence. I bring my wife down to see my work and usually get a "what am I looking at". Seriously... what is wrong with them? Welding is like fine art.

I have an RRS power steering rack using the original pump. I think this will be the easiest part. The rack looks very well made. Can't wait to see how it drives.

Awesome, interested in the conversion, I have just finished a RHD conversion on my 65FB, so hopefully I will start my 69 next year. I use the Falcon xf variable power steering box and falcon saginaw pump. I will follow your progress with interested.

While you're in the office, check out this site. It is brilliant. Jody is great at explaining, well just about everything, in an easy to understand way. There is so much info, it'll make your head spin.

Get yourself some acetone and a stainless wire brush and keep it just for cleaning the aluminium. Clean everything as much as you can before sparking the TIG. Impurities are your enemy with alloy. Even down to cutting wheel particles or paint off a saw blade. Nailing a sexy alloy weld sure is rewarding. My wife loves it when I bring some hot freshly welding metal inside to show her a nice weld.....not really. haha
Nice. My A-pillars were pretty average. Around my rear glass was worse. But I suspect mostly it was due to people screwing around with the moulding so much trying to stop window leaks.

There is no comparison between those old paints and the Glasurit paint.

bigmal reacted to Mike65 in Replacing Front RH Chasis Rail and Both Torque Boxes
Look at several of the build threads in the project progress section of the forum, many of us have done torque boxs & it should give you an idea of how they go together. When you purchase them get the 2 piece ones, IMO they are easier to install.
