Mach1 Driver 560 Report post Posted July 28, 2018 The port coming out of the head is only so big. I asked Stan Johnson at FPA (Ford Powertrain Applications) about headers for my 351W with AFR heads. he said: "We know the full 1-5/8" has shown us 515 HP. The Step is by farrrrrr our most popular header having produced the same power as our full 1-3/4" (664@7000) but with more torque than our 1-3/4" and more room!" BuckeyeDemon 211 Report post Posted July 28, 2018 it's like taper in an intake manifold. keeps the speed up closest to the port, reduces restriction as it gets farther from the valve, helps reduce reversion, could be easier to build....
barnett468 418 Report post Posted July 28, 2018 There is no one particular header design that is the overall best in all applications. Standard straight tube headers outperform stepped headers on some combos. To find the exact header that will provide you with the most overall power in the rpm range you want it to, you need to buy several different types then try them all on a dyno. https://www.hotrod.com/articles/ctrp-0806-exhaust-header-dyno-test/
