Scrap The new Motor Idea and Build My 351w

Recommended Posts

Well, due to life and some financial burdens (my mother has to go into a nursing home among other things) I can't swing the new motor that you all have helped me plan out. However I can do some work on my existing motor that will fit into my budget. I have a pretty much stock 351w with a Performer intake. If I do a mild performance rebuild on it I can keep my FMX transmission and upgrade my rear end. That will keep me within a budget and still get some performance results out of my Mustang.

First off I thought about going with a top end kit. Edelbrock p/n 2092   http://m.summitracing.com/parts/edl-2092

Then I can rebuild my FMX with the shift kit, band and clutches that Barnett suggested in a previous post.

I could still go with the FPA headers and dana trutrac rear end. Keeping the FMX and stock converter I thought I could go with 3:25 gears (The stock gears are 3:00 I think, not sure). In my head this will be somewhat performance enhanced and still be lots cheaper than going with that 393 stroker we were discussing..

What do you guys think?

.

very sorry to hear about your mom, that is just bad.

if you want a lot quicker acceleration, you really should install numerically higher gears like 3.43 . . going from 3.00 to 3.25 will certainly be a help but it wont make a big change . . there is no point in building your engine with a lot more power if you do not do this but you can still get decent performance with the 3.25 gears and a mild engine upgrade, however, if you want to roast the tires, you definitely need a stall converter and i would use a 2000 rpm one, especially with the 3.25 gears.

head flow and compression are the key to power . . if you have the money buy some eddy e street heads for $1,025.00 . . it will probably cost you $650.00 to rebuild yours because on top of the valve job, you need to pin the rocker studs or install screw in studs and get them surfaced and do some mild port work and get new springs and retainers.

just buy hedman elite headers if you are on a budget . . the fpa's are great but overkill and overpriced for your app . . even shorty headers will work fine.

I got that very top end kit, on my .030 overbore 351W, making it a 358 cui. (10.80 c/r). I run a 750 cfm Speed Demon vacuum on it. Long tube headers. Also had the FMX. The heads deliver good power, and is fun to drive. I have 3.70 gears, TruTrac diff.

Thank you for the concerns about my mother. It just is going to cost more than I anticipated getting her qualified for Medicaid.

I totaled up what Barnett listed and it comes to around $4000.  For $4500 I could get the 393 stroker with the RPM intake and 750 cfm carb. I could leave the rest of the motor as is, change the torque converter and put gears in. That may be a cheaper way to go or at least have more horsepower for just a little more money. I wouldn’t need an overdrive tranny or worry about the power brakes.

If I just went with the motor as is and just swap out the intake and carb (what Mikestang suggested) what stall speed would I need and what gears would be best. I would like it to be drivable on the interstate.
