Is this supposed to be here?

This bracket was mounted through the floor just forward of the gas tank on the underside of the car.  I had to remove it to get the new fuel tank to sit flush in the trunk.  I have two questions.

 

1. Is it supposed to be there, or is it an addition that a PO made?

 

2. If it's supposed to be there, what is it for? 

 

If I'm going to keep it, then I'll need to modify some things to make the tank fit properly.  If it's not needed, I'll just weld up the holes and move on with the tank install.

Looks like a homemade tailpipe hanger. Toss it.

Thanks for the input guys.  It was pretty much centered in the trunk area right where you see the tank screw coming through Brian's floor. 

 

I'll toss it and move on with my life ;-)

could it have been where a trailer hitch was attached? I have a hitch on mine, and it goes under the tank and attaches about where this is.

hmm....maybe so danno.  I have no information about previous owners, so I can't ask.

 

as for keeping it, I'll just toss it in my 'spare steel' bin for use in a future project.

I believe it is part of the trailer hitch ,i have a couple of them here if i can find them .there will probably be two more holes in the trunk brace inside the trunk at the tail panel if it had a hitch at one time .
