EastYorkStang 63 Report post Posted January 20, 2013 I want to remove the power steering off my '70 with a 351W. Has anyone done this? Doesn't matter to me if its V or serpintine belt.
dennyb68 11 Report post Posted January 20, 2013 I did it on my 69 and was a piece of cake. All I did was remove the pump and the slave cylinder and installed the adapter that can be had for around $100 and it was done.
Mike65 476 Report post Posted January 20, 2013 How hard is it to steer it witout power steering?.
Must1969 10 Report post Posted January 20, 2013 They dont call it armstrong steering for nothing. Sitting still it is hard but when you are moving it it no problem at all. I myself put up with all the problems of powersteering because I think it is worth it.
fordguy69 24 Report post Posted January 20, 2013 Borgeson offers rebuilt manual steering boxes for our cars now. They have 19:1 ratio instead of the power steering 16:1. Couple that with a 15" steering wheel and the steering effort is very livable. I have an iron headed 460 in mine and with the above setup, even my wife can comfortably steer the car. The ratio change doesn't sound like much, but it makes a huge difference.
69_Mustang 26 Report post Posted January 20, 2013 Doesn't that ratio change add more turn to turn lock?
69droptopgt 10 Report post Posted January 20, 2013 The ratio is different between the two. More turns lock to lock on the non power power steering to help with steering.
EastYorkStang 63 Report post Posted January 20, 2013 What adapter are you talking about? My car originally had a/c as well so I have multiple grooved pulleys.
dennyb68 11 Report post Posted January 20, 2013 most mustang venders sell the adapter as far as the pulleys go not sure what you can do about that. I run a serpentine setup on mine and I have no A/C so it was pretty easy
Big Secz 26 Report post Posted January 21, 2013 You should also replace the power steering control valve with a manual drag link adapter.
69_Mustang 26 Report post Posted January 21, 2013 This is all you need: http://www.cjponyparts.com/borgeson-manual-steering-adapter-1967-1970/p/MSA2/ Pull ALL the PS stuff and and put this in. It's pretty straight forward once you're under there.
