428 Timing

Recommended Posts

If it's a true (drag) race only cam, the initial advance should be the total advance with locked out timing. This would be usually anywhere from about 36* to 42*. If it's more a street/strip cam, set the initial around 18*-20* with the rest in the distributor with a total of around 38*.

With locked out timing, it helps to have a start timing retard to make it easier on the starter. Not absolutely required though.

Does anyone know what the initial timing should be on a 428CJ with a full race cam? Also what RPM should I set it to in idle for the timing adjustment? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Start with it at 8*- 800 rpm.

Then work with it till the settings are what the engine build wants to run best.
