428mach169 10 Report post Posted April 21, 2011 Does anyone know what the initial timing should be on a 428CJ with a full race cam? Also what RPM should I set it to in idle for the timing adjustment? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
jmlay 80 Report post Posted April 21, 2011 There is no single answer for all, especially if you do not provide full details of the build. YOu may want to visit http://www.fordfe.com
afret 37 Report post Posted April 21, 2011 If it's a true (drag) race only cam, the initial advance should be the total advance with locked out timing. This would be usually anywhere from about 36* to 42*. If it's more a street/strip cam, set the initial around 18*-20* with the rest in the distributor with a total of around 38*. With locked out timing, it helps to have a start timing retard to make it easier on the starter. Not absolutely required though.
428mach169 10 Report post Posted April 22, 2011 This is great. I really appreciate it. Just got the stang a few weeks ago. Trying to learn as much as possible to do everything myself. I'll let you know how it goes.

Then work with it till the settings are what the engine build wants to run best.
428 Cobra Jet 10 Report post Posted May 23, 2011 Guy's, Check the cam specs, if you dont know then for 108-110 deg lobe cam try initial 14deg BTDC @ 850rpm / total advance should be around 36deg. This should be a good starting point if it is as described.
