ashleesmach1 28 Report post Posted December 15, 2010 I think your options are few but you should be able to check with your local dmv for a title check. Possibly do a history check.

KT 69 12 Report post Posted December 16, 2010 Auto check needs a 17 character VIN (post 81). The 69 VIN has less seems options are nil to none. My local DMV are brain dead when comes to this issue...you want what?????????

d.reese 13 Report post Posted December 19, 2010 I'm not sure if this helps, other than to think along these lines with your dmv. I have a friend in TX that says: Basically any car in Texas is deleted from the database after no activity for 5 years. But if a vehicle is ever reported stolen, it is never removed from the stolen database until the vehicle is recovered. Just ask if it shows in the stolen database? BillW 0 Report post Posted December 19, 2010 Does the seller have a title? If so try checking with whoever issued the title to see if they have any liens recorded.
LindenBruce 27 Report post Posted December 20, 2010 Your best bet is to head on down to DMV and do a public information request on the vin. I know here in California you can do it no problem for a small fee. I'm not sure how it works in Iowa. Bruce
Max Power 74 Report post Posted December 20, 2010 Every states DMV is different, but I am sure all of them can tell you if a title is clear. CarFax on a 69 car? Good one. We didn't even have computers then....LOL.
very fat and very dumb 40 Report post Posted December 21, 2010 Why not go to the DMV with the owner and tranfer it into your name. I am not a lawyer but I'd say a lien would be placed on the car due to an outstandin loan. Typically you do not get the title until the loan is paid off, therefore if he has a title it should be paid for.
Handegard 10 Report post Posted December 21, 2010 State Patrol told me to check vins with the https://www.nicb.org/theft_and_fraud_awareness/vincheck If it doesn't show up there, ask your state patrol if it's stolen. Thats all that matters. If it's been sitting, it's likely been removed the the DMVs records, and if they have the title, you will have no problem transfering it to you. If they don't you can get it registered, but it varies how it's done. Here, State Patrol does a VIN check (makes sure it's not stolen) then DOL issues you a 3 year registration period, the end of which you get a title. But as long as it's not stolen... ya know ;)
