Is it possible to use front discs on rear

Recommended Posts

I'm uping the anchors on the Mach I to 300mm upfront. I'm curious if I'm actually able to use the factory discs and calipers to convert the rear to discs (from drums). Has anybody heard of this being done.

Thx david

As I recall this was done by the Factory on the Boss 302 track cars. A bracket was used to mount the front disc/rotor to the axle. Also part of the mod was to mount Lincoln Disc/rotors for the front. All of this was very heavy, and the brackets are probably impossible to find these days.

Why not go with the "Mustang Steve" or "Street or Track" kits? They are well thought out and readily available. These kits use very common components, which will help when it comes time for repairs.

Which ever way you go, post pics of your project!

I think you'd want a rotor that worked as a hat the slips over the axle suds. The front rotors are set up for a tapered end with bearings. Seems like you're need some majorly custom axles to get a chance of them working

hey that is a deal for the cobra kit. i wonder if it will fit on a granda spindle..i cant seem to find my drum spndle...

I have been looking into getting the brakes upgraded in my Mach 1. These are the vendors i looked at:

http://www.ultrastang.com/Page.asp?PageID=34

http://www.mustangsteve.com/cobrabrakes.html

http://www.streetortrack.com/13-Cobra-front-bracket-kit-pr-23991.html

http://www.vintagevenom.com/mustang-cobra-rear-disc-brake-conversion

I have no experience with any of these vendors, so I cannot recommend any one over the others.

I do remember one of them has a kit specifically for the

Granada spindle.

Im looking at using an 80's model Aussie Falcon rear set up. I can get the 286mm vented disc, caliper, hoses, lines, handbrake, backing plate and bolts for around U$150. Then give it all to my mechanic to fix, with a slab JB and coke of course.

Thx for the feedback guys.

the aussie falcon setup should probably work fine as long they used the small bearing axles, if they used the larger bearing axles they may not work without some mods if at all. if your mach still has the stock 2 piece front disc rotors with the seperate hub and rotor they can be made to work on the back with a custom bracket for the caliper, however you will no longer have an E-brake and from what i know of Aussie rules and regs that's a big no-no. hope the falcon brakes work for you.

BTW, i need a set of XB falcon GT wheel center caps, the smaller aussie only style ones if you can lay your hands on a set.....LOL

Like these?

A lot of Aussie Ford commercial vans and utes had similar caps but they're painted gray, not chrome, like the GT or GS caps. The GT and GS caps are fairly rare. Special nuts are required as well.

that's the ones, i bought a set of old school Cragar center caps that are very similar thinking they might work with either my GT wheels, preferably, or at least my dodge cop car "rally" wheels. unfortunately they didn' work with either one, however they did work just fine on a spare jeep rally wheel i bought when i had my old cherokee and they worked great on that wheel........ i was really hoping the cragar caps would work without having to try and modify them or something but that's not the case. i hate to try and modify them to make them fit but i guess i will if i have to though. i actually got pretty lucky on this set and picked them up off of ebay for 20 bucks so i won't be losing anything if i screw them up however i will probably try to find a single one on ebay to start with and if it looks like their not going to work even with modifying them i'll use them on something else instead or sell them
