Aluminum Radiator Questions For chillininnh or Anybody else.

Recommended Posts

Here is an old link that I was reading:

http://1969stang.com/forum/index.php?/topic/52578-new-radiator-purchase/?hl=radiator

I like the radiator that chillininnh has. He left a link and I really like this setup. Tried to PM him but he can not receive PMs. I was wondering how the fans are controlled. Is there some sort of thermostat and relay? Where would I get this and how is it hooked up. Also how is this radiator mounted? It looks like a custom top bracket. Was wondering if it was bought or made? Also does this radiator just drop into the stock mounts or is there something else that has to be done to mount it? I need a new radiator and this seems like a good deal.

Thanks in advance for your help guys.

I bought a radiator from Northern Radiator, and I am absolutely shocked at how much better it works than the stock one.  Quality constuction, decent price, and made in the USA.  They also make electric fans and shrouds for them.  I would highly recommend them.  The website doesn't give the price, but find the numbers you need, and then I did a search and found it on Amazon.

I see what you mean Barnett. The other one on ebay has a total cfm of 2780.

well its actually a lot more complicated than that . . the amount of total flow from two fans is a bit of deceptive advertising . . its difficult to explain but each fan flows one half of 2780 . . there is no such thing as a single fan that flows 2780 . . the closest to that flow rate would be a lincoln MK VIII fan.

now, to make it incredibly more complicated, the advertised cfn ratings are in free air . . when the fan is strapped to a rad, there is a load placed on it so the fans with the stronger motors will flow more air under this load.

the bigger the motor, the higher the price.

the highest flowing fans eat around 30 amps . . if you see a fan that says 200 cfm but the amp draw is only 12 amps etc, they are basically lying about the air flow but not about the amps.

spal make great fans but they make around 100 different ones . . they do not all have the same size motors.

That makes sense. Now I need to know how to mount it and how to control it.

FAN CONTROLLERS

http://www.dccontrol.com/selector.htm

YOU CAN HAVE THEM OPERATE TOGETHER WITH VARIABLE OR FIXED SPEED OR OPERATE SEPARATELY WITH FIXED SPEED IN WHICH CASE ONE WOULD B E ON ALL THE TIME AND THE OTHER WOULD ONLY COME ON AT A CERTAIN TEMP.

The radiator mounts in the factory spots, and the fan shroud mounts to the sides of the radiator with supplied hardware.  Just need to drill a few holes in the mounting flange.  At least that's how mine went, and I'm assuming they are all the same way.

This is what we make. I made sure when we made it that it would fit the factory mounting brackets. Our radiators are made with 2 rows of 1 1/4 tubes compared to the competitors whic are 1 inch.
