MikeStang 247 Report post Posted December 29, 2014 Hey guys just a heads up, If you considering Buying Black Chrome wheels think long and hard about it. I bought a Used set that looked brand new and now 6 months later my chrome is starting to flake BAD. I was on the return trip from Houston yestarday and my Son noticed something black on the wheel lip, I rubbed it with my finger and took off 2" of what appeared to be chrome paint...IM like WTF....The wheels were beautifully Perfect and not a single spot of curb rash now the whole lip is almost black. The wheel under the chrome plating is smooth and defect free, but wouldn't a plating need some "Tooth or etching" to adhere to not a glass smooth surface. Anyhow My rims went from Perfect to WTF Here comes the Plasti-dip in seconds. By the time I got the car home from Houston driving it in the rain the wheel looked like real Ass....Ill get some pics this evening for everyone. SM69Mach 68 Report post Posted December 29, 2014 Well that sucks. What kind of wheel was it and who made it?
rwcstang 204 Report post Posted December 29, 2014 Mike, what type of wheels did you buy? that's unfortunate that your wheels are flaking off. I would re-chrome if not I would purchase another set.
MikeStang 247 Report post Posted December 29, 2014 Seems that the Black Chrome is not really a standard chroming process but rather a thin paint of some type or something....I read an article on it and its an even thinner coating than chrome dip...and rechrome here is expensive...probably just gonna plasti dip them and call it a day. I will take some pics and see who makes them because they did have some defective black chrome stuff coming out when they first arrived on the scene
