HELP 1999 mustang suspension to 1970 mustang

Recommended Posts

Hey guys so I had a question. So I have a 1999 gt mustang with a supercharged 4.6 that I'm swapping into a 1970 mustang fastback. I know the 4.6 will fit with me having to cut the shock towers off and I know the tranny with match up perfectly with out mods. But does anyone know if I can use the suspension as well? And if I can, what fabrication modifications do I do. Or are there any kits that will allow me to use the suspension.

The closest you'll get from my knowledge is an AJE Racing front crossmember and suspension, which will utilize the 99 mustang spindles/brakes/rack and pinion. Thats a $2500 kit though, not sure of your budget. You will need to remove the shock towers to get the 4.6 to fit anyways, so you are looking at using an aftermarket suspension regardless (not cheap)

There have been afew swaps done at the pro level that have grafted the later model sheet metal to the early car to use the whole front end. All looked like a boat load of work.

If there is a decent kit to use that's what I would be looking at

Fat Man Fabrications offers a kit that would probably work for you,

In conjunction with trimming back the shock towers

FordMuscle.com Magazine DIY article.

Nice writeup in their forums too..

RRS makes a kit too

There is another brand that has stamped panels, with fewer 90° angles, but I can't find it right now.

A friend of mine is in the process of doing that swap using a '98 mustang. He basically built a cradle from the '98 suspension and graphed in the shock towers. I believe he's test fitted everything but has it back out to do other work on the body. I believe he plans to drop the frame into it and weld it up. Here's some pics.

The thing I would worry about is the difference in wheelbases between the two generations of Mustangs. The 1967-70 (if I recall correctly) has a 108" wheel base. The 94-04 Mustangs have a 101" wheel base. Those 7" might be important to how the steering is setup and how well the SN95 steering works in the older body.

Yes that is a valid concern. What you are referring to is the akermans angle which is the toe out on turns. The radius the frond wheels follow from the inside line to the outside line is very different.

With all that said, unless you are racing, or unless you are a very experienced professional driver you will Likly never really notice any difference.

This will cause a little accelerated wear on your front tires, you may loose a cople percent of their life
