waketek516 10 Report post Posted December 12, 2013 So my rear aprons were torn apart by someone trying to get the hinges off: I just ordered up some new premium ones from CJs during their sale last week. They should be here later today. http://www.cjponyparts.com/premium-rear-fender-apron-passenger-side-1969-1970/p/XM327R/

waketek516 10 Report post Posted February 14, 2014 I cleaned the car out last night (its been full of parts all winter), and will have it out this weekend! I'll get some good pics of it for all you guys. I also have some questions on some parts that I'll get pics of as well.
waketek516 10 Report post Posted February 14, 2014 So the Marti report shows that the car was originally Gold/Ginger. Similar to these cars: I got a letter from the previous owner today saying that he found some pics of the car when he got it in the late 90s. At some point it was painted red. He then did most of the body work, and stripped it and primed it. Last night I was taking off some of the busted windshield trim brackets and was able to confirm that Marti and the PO were both right! :) Gold & Red!! waketek516 10 Report post Posted February 24, 2014 I also finally put together my Christmas Present from my wife... Hobart 00550 Auto Arc 130 kit http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002VECKTM/ref=oh_details_o06_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Really nice kit, and should be sufficient for the welding I need to do. Its actually made by Miller under the Hobart/AutoArc name, and all the internals are identical to the Miller. I also like that the cart is nice and small. Since I'm working out of a 1-car garage, I need all the space savings I can find! Its supposed to rain here this week, so I don't know that I'll get to try it out for a few days. Mike65 476 Report post Posted February 25, 2014 Waketek516, I feel your pain since I am working out of a 1 car garage also & unfortunately during the winter months (which you do not have to deal with) if the temp is not above 35-40 not much gets done unless I can do it in the closed garage. Most times I have to roll the Mustang outside or at least 1/2 way out to work on it. I also have a small welding cart so it doesn't take up much room in the garage since the Mustang is sharing its space with my woodworking machines, water heater, furnace, spare freezer, washer, dryer, my tool box, my compressor & work bench. Mike.

waketek516 10 Report post Posted February 25, 2014 Scored a sweet set of the race mirrors on eBaY - great shape, and the cable remote still works great!
waketek516 10 Report post Posted February 28, 2014 I've been torn about what color to paint this car... Black or Grabber Blue. I've had black cars my whole life, and LOVE a clean black car. Nothing looks better! But lately the Grabber Blue has been growing on me. Its such a great color for that year car. I've been planning on building a loosely Boss 429/TransAM inspired Resto-Mod for this car, and while bored at work, this is what I came up with: I'm falling in love with my design... hehe . jwscarab 20 Report post Posted February 28, 2014 (edited) That will look sweet! I really like the look of the t/a cars! The oval exhaust coming out right in front of the rear tires looks so sweet! I rear it can be louder than expected tho. Sell those extra parts on fleabay and the forums! That's what I did. It helped me raise a lot of cash for my project - a lot more than I realized! Cool car - have fun with the build!! Edited March 4, 2014 by jwscarab
Tgriffin91 27 Report post Posted February 28, 2014 I'm painting my car grabber blue I think. That's years off but that's what I'm thinking of as of now. Go with the blue!

djjsc 10 Report post Posted March 9, 2014 (edited) So that means that my particular 351 is a 1979 from a full size car.(D) 197x (9) 1979 (A) Full Size/Galaxy Ford casting #s are often misinterpreted as meaning the car they came from. Not always true. A Ford casting # more accurately means the car it was originally designed for; the "A" 3rd digit would mean the Ford division that paid for development of the casting. A D9AE engine casting would have been used across all Ford/Mercury vehicles, including light trucks from 1979 onward til the next redesign. djjsc 10 Report post Posted March 9, 2014 The top number is called the engineering number. The bottom one is the block's casting date. Your block was cast on July 27, 1969. 1969 351W blocks are desirable. Nice score. Sorry, D9 means block was originally designed for the 1979 model yr. Strange that a '79 part would be cast in 1969. waketek516 10 Report post Posted March 14, 2014 I'm not using that motor anymore, so not sure why you're posting about it almost a year later. Anyway... Last night I fabbed up a redneck chassis brace so that I can start cutting out the suspension without the car falling on the floor :) It's actually stronger than I thought it would be, and will allow me to roll it out of the garage as needed:
waketek516 10 Report post Posted March 17, 2014 Started out Friday after work and unbolted, pried, and cut out the old suspension: Sunday was the big day... lots of cutting, grinding, drilling, sawing. I started out using my spot weld cutter to drill out every spot weld I could find that attached the tower to the car. That took a while, but using a good drill, good cutters, and some oil let me make it through the whole job on the same bit.
waketek516 10 Report post Posted March 17, 2014 Next up was using a combination of my sawzall, 4.5" cutoff wheel, dremel saw max, a BFH, big pry bar, and my sneakers: It took about an hour to get it out, but now that I know exactly where to drill and cut the pass side tower should be easier. Also, the metal under the rails was in really good shape. Once I ground the spot welds down, the rail looks like its in really good shape - so that was good news. waketek516 10 Report post Posted March 20, 2014 Quick update... Now that I knew exactly where to cut, I got the passenger side tower out in about 40mins. The Passenger side rail has a bit more pitting, but still structurally sound. once the new system is boxed in around the rail - it'll never see the elements again. I also found out that teh aprons were replaced at somepoint, and rather than weld them in, the person just used some kind of thick, black adhesive. LOL That's been fun to scrape out:
waketek516 10 Report post Posted April 4, 2014 The Rod and Custom kit finally arrived!!!!!! Its A LOT of boxes, but all this stuff looks top notch!! I'm very impressed so far! 2" Drop Spindles Sway Bar Apron Panels (replaces Shock Towers) Drilled/Slotted Rotors Box of Brackets, Hardware, Shocks, brake lines, etc... QA1 Coilovers (these look sick!) FOX Mustang PS Rack from Unisteer Upper and Lower Tubular Control Arms And the holy grail!! This is some of the best fab work I've ever seen: I'm going to start doing some of the finishing work on the rails this weekend so that I can hopefully get this mounted sometime in the next few weeks!
