instrument cluster connector question

Recommended Posts

Hi everybody, I'm new at the forum, its great  !! I have read all posts, yeah all posts !! well, all of them that seems interesting or useful for me, but I scrolled over all pages.

Well, I wanted to ask you about the instrument cluster, when I bought my stang it didn't came with this connector, does anybody knows if there is another car that share the same connector? as you know there is a very little posibility to find a junk yard with mustangs.

so, any suggestions? or maybe an idea how to fabricate or replace te connector?

the connector is shown in the pic.

It's hard to tell which of the three connectors you are referring to in the photo. If you are referring to the largest one, it is the main power source for the instrument panel. There are several mustang specific bone yards that can sell you that piece and you'll just have to splice the wires together, which should not be hard since the wires are color coded. Do a search on the internet and you should turn up a few sources. You might also check ebay under 69-70 mustangs parts. If i'm not mistaken, i think the cougars of the 69 and 70 vintage may have used the same connector. You'll have to check that out.

I was talkin about the main connector, the big one, I live in mexico and is pretty hard to find junkyards with vintage mustangs, and mustang parts stores dont have this connector.

I think I have to check out ebay, but price will very high because of the shipping.

BTW, yes, there are swap meets, but at this time they are fixing the place where they are placed, and are suspended for now, the main is the "classic car market" and there are a lot of people trading and/or selling car parts, but rarely they bring electric parts like this, that why I was wondering how to fabricate the connector.

If i make some advance in my research i'll post it here, I have the pinout schematic from the connector so that will be easy.

I attach it if someone needs it

There are several used parts vendors, but you may have to buy an entire harness as most won't be willing to separate the connector. Ask if they have any harnesses with a lot of cut wires. They will usually make a good deal on one that's in bad shape.

Here are a few used Mustang parts vendors:

Bluegrass Mustangs Unlimited http://www.bgmustang.com

Mike's Ford Parts 410-658-3192

Blue Ridge Classic Mustang http://www.usedmustangparts.net

West Coast Classic Cougar http://www.westcoastclassiccougarinc.com

Classic Automotive LTD 810-659-5270 (evenings, ask for Paul)

H&H Ford Parts 540-325-0534 (Kevin) or 540-325-7608 (Delmar)

Also, use the right tool to de-pin the connector to keep from tearing it up. There is a tang that spring loads against the connector shell you will need to depress in order to slide the wire out without damage.

I hope this helps you.

By the way, have you joined a Mustang club? I've searched on the web for Mexican built Mustangs and have come across a few clubs in Mexico. There are even forums online specifically for those clubs.

Here's one.

Hey, thanks for the info !! but its a shame that my car did'nt came with the vin plate  hahah, otherwise I would be happy to contribute to that site.

About the mexican mustang clubs, I dont know, I tried posting at allfordmustangs but, cause its a general mustang forum, the response from them are more slow than here, and well, i feel like they think they are a little "elite"..

In 1 month I only got I response about a question I made, and here, in 1 week i have read more useful info than there in one month, besides that here is a specific 69 mustang forum, I can give or receive more help. :tongue_smilie:

I'll try to post as more as I can about my little knowledge that I'm gaining, so others can learn from my mistakes.

Thanks to you all !!

BTW: I contacted the guy with the online junkyard and he told me that he has the main instrument cluster connector, so next step is to save a little money to order it.

I'm waiting for other parts I ordered so I can install finally my door and quarter classes, meanwhile I'll be posting about in my 3 point seatbelts installation.
