Trying to figure out the bottom of the steering column. I thought the doughnut shaped "spongy"  ring was supposed to fit in the end (by the steering coupler). It fis really tight and then hits the plastic insulator making a clicking sound as it catches when turning the wheel. It is possible that the sponge ring is too big?

Here is a series of pics when I built the one for my sons car. I put the donut in first between the inner and outer shell.  I then snapped in the plastic bushing.  Hope this helps.

Your doughnut looks much thinner than mine.

I bought a new one online. It is very tight and has to be stuffed in there. I lubed it a bit also. Hope that helps.
