hard steering out of driveway...

I have an automatic 1969 Mustang Coupe with a new power steering pump. Having a hard time steering moving car around out of driveway. When you give the car some gas it is fine. Is this normal or should there be some adjustments made? Any suggestions appreciated.

How smooth does the car idle? Have you completely cycled it from lock to lock a few times to purge any air?

cycled it as you suggested and helped tighten belt a little more. I think the idle is a little high, but haven't drove it anywhere yet....

Are the pulleys the correct size? Too small of a crank pulley (and/or too large of a power steering pump pulley) and the pump would not make enough pressure to operate properly at low engine speed.

Pulleys are correct size. Has new power steering pump. Power Steering lines Bled....

It is an Automatic.

 

Any more ideas????

Auto or std trans? Is it giving gas that helps or letting out the clutch? Theres a common problem if you have a std see here: http://www.1969stang.com/mustang/forum/showthread.php?t=12485

Similiar problem. Ended up being power control valve. Make sue your belts are tight. I am assuming you used type f trans fluid. If not could be the problem too

used the F Fluid. Bought a new PS Control Valve, but from what I have been reading, new ones are bad sometimes to.

 

 

Bought rebuilt PS Pump. How do I check to make sure it is working properly and the Pressure??

How hard is too hard to turn?

These systems are power assist, Not power steering like a a fluid driven steering box on 71 and up cars.

IIRC it should have approx 16-18 inch pound required to move the wheels at 800 rpm pump speed.

Last thing to check or change is power ram. Unfortunately when I was trouble shooting mine found there was no real wasy to easily test components. That is why I exchanged all components including hoses. Lot of people don't change out hoses when putting new componets and they don't seat correctly because of inner seats are conformed to old hoses/valves and you get leaks. May want to call John at Cockostang. Really knows his stuff on these PS systems. Good Luck.

Are the pulleys the appropriate size? Too little of a turn lever (and/ or too huge of a energy guiding push pulley) and the push would not create enough stress to function effectively at low motor rate. . . . . . . . . .

Working with Chock O Stang. Looks like we got a bad Power Steering Pump from wholesaleparts.com. Ordered one of Chock O Stang. It was shipped out today. Will keep you all updated.
