wfridolfson 10 Report post Posted April 16, 2011 have a 351C, just put in new cam, lifters, timing chain, has the 4V closed chamber heads, torker intake with barry grant speed demon carb. Broke the cam in at 2000 rpm for 20min like comp says, my trouble is that it will not idle, will run if you keep at or above 1500 rpm, but try and let it idle and shuts off, only time it did idle was after cam break in and was able to set timing,i'm thinking its with the carb, it is electric choke and when cold will idle up been when gets warm shut down, any ideas
Rcodenewf 44 Report post Posted April 16, 2011 Have you checked for vacuum leaks...maybe a hose off somewhere or an open vacuum port? John

LoneWolf2U 136 Report post Posted April 16, 2011 Your Idle passages are blocked or it needs mixture/speed adjustments.
wfridolfson 10 Report post Posted April 16, 2011 how do you check idle passages, this thing has me so pissed i can't see straight, why do we love these cars
Rcodenewf 44 Report post Posted April 16, 2011 Try this for a starter: Take out each mixture screw and shoot some carb cleaner in there and then hit it with compressed air. Compressed air will also shoot up the airhorn cleaning out the low speed air bleeds. Screw the mixture screws back in and bottom them out lightly. Back them both out 1 1/2 turns as a starter and fire the engine up. Let it warm up and then see if it idles somewhat on its own. If it still refuses to idle back each screw out 1/4 of a turn and see if that improves it...if it does then you know you are going in the right direction. If not bo back in that 1/4 turn and then 1/4 turn more. Again, see if it likes it. Just curious, what do you have base timing set at with vacuum advance disconnected? LoneWolf2U 136 Report post Posted April 18, 2011 how do you check idle passages, this thing has me so pissed i can't see straight, why do we love these cars BG carbs had a bad rap for having machining scraps in the bowels. Time to give it a good cleaning.
