jerry69 10 Report post Posted February 17, 2010 (edited) I have a 69 Mustang coupe with power steering, when I look down I see the stud on the control valve will move a 1/4 inch each way before moving any other part of the steering moves. Is this stud suppose to swivel side to side or is it suppose to be in a fixed position? Thanks for any help Jerry69 Edited February 18, 2010 by jerry69
jag 10 Report post Posted February 18, 2010 I say your power steering valve needs to be rebuilt. Your steering is loose, isn't it? jag
jerry69 10 Report post Posted February 18, 2010 It's tight except right there, I can see the stud move side to side and the pitman arm looks like it might be loose and not tighten down, but I can see the carter pin going through the castle nut. Just looks odd watching it. I can't get to it till I can get my friends lift and get a good look at it.
magician 13 Report post Posted February 18, 2010 I believe some movement is normal. The stud moving controls the direction of the fluid pressure. E-mail Randy(the steering Guru) at http://www.stangerssite.com/links.html. with questions

jimmystang 13 Report post Posted February 18, 2010 That movement is the mechanical signal needed to send hydraulics to either side of the power assist ram. It's normal.
jag 10 Report post Posted February 20, 2010 The movement of the stud and the extension of the steering cyclinder should happen almost simultaneously. Other wise you get steering wheel movement and no movement of the wheels. That equals sloppy steering. jag
