Ltnrisk 104 Report post Posted March 4, 2009 Hey guys, I am sure most of you are pretty excited about summer coming soon as I am. Well anyways I am going to do a auto- 5 speed conversion. The only thing is I am clueless to what would be the right transmission for my 302/347. So far I understand that the T5 is a good option. Are there other options keeping a budget in mind? Fordrevhead 29 Report post Posted March 5, 2009 Are you looking to buy a used stock Borg Warner GT T5? 85-89 T5's are the same and then 90-93's are the same, 90-93's having stronger gearsets. Some last 10k some last 150k, depends if you get a good one and depends how it's driven. There's a lot of variations of this transmission now and some tough aftermarket ones. When Tremec bought Borg Warner they didnt change this design initially. True Tremec T-5's later were tougher and they made T5 5 speeds and T5 6 speeds. For the amount of work to put it in, I'd personally hold out for a TKO or a T-56. read up http://www.moderndriveline.com/Technical_Bits/t5_history.htm
Ltnrisk 104 Report post Posted March 6, 2009 yea I am looking to buy a used one and rebuild. Thanks for the link I understand more about the T5 now. Does it matter at all what year it is, or do they all fit?
1BAD351 21 Report post Posted March 11, 2009 I don't know a ton about the t5, but I do know my buddy blew up 2 of them in his 90. I have also heard that they aren't very reliable/strong trannys without some work. Id go with a tko500 if you want a 5 speed.
xplane 10 Report post Posted April 5, 2009 I had a 90-93 T-5 in my 68 GT coupe which was a daily driver for 10 years. I had zero problems with the trans. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o:p></o:p> <o:p></o:p> Like Fordrevhead mentioned, how it is driven is a major determination on longevity. I added Cal-Tracs and drag radials a couple of years ago and broke both welds on the spring perches! <o:p></o:p> <o:p></o:p> Stick with street tires and less aggressive driving and you should be fine.<o:p></o:p> <o:p></o:p> Mike<o:p></o:p>
CavScout 10 Report post Posted May 1, 2009 Like Ltnrsk, I am looking to do a swap as well. Would a T-5 work with a 390 s code as well? I am considering swapping out my C6 for a manual to significantly improve the grin per mile. I would put my car closer to the daily driver category...vs hard core racing.
