jag 10 Report post Posted June 3, 2008 I'm getting ready to paint my new reproduction 70 grill. What does evryone do to get the new plastic ready to accept paint? What chemicals does everyone use to get rid of any mold release powders, chemicals, etc.? Thanks JAG
SELLERSRODSHOP 13 Report post Posted June 3, 2008 scuff the part with a grey scotchbrite pad, wash thoroughly with soap & water, then after its dry shoot a light coat of aerosol plastic primer (available at the auto paint store) then you are ready for paint after it cures out. the plastic primer is really thin & clear, so just mist it lightly. if you load it up it will mottle. bnickel 10,004 Report post Posted June 3, 2008 i always use HOT water and Dawn dish soap on plastic parts and it works very, very well. on a new part you want to make sure you get ALL of the mold release off before you paint it and the hot water will definitely help
S code 69 13 Report post Posted June 14, 2008 Since they're black plastic should you even paint it? weren't the originals bare plastic?
bnickel 10,004 Report post Posted June 14, 2008 they were originally painted over black plastic
6T9rustang 11 Report post Posted June 15, 2008 The paint will weather better than unsealed black plastic. The black plastic, if left unpainted, will become porous and will fade to gray. Think of the paint as a sealer.

jag 10 Report post Posted June 20, 2008 Well I used the dawn and hot water to clean the grill and then painted it......when dry naturally. It came out very well. I am pleased with the results. Thanks for all the great tips on getting the grill painted. JAG
