EastYorkStang 63 Report post Posted March 19, 2022 Read all about wiring in a new generation starter using the existing solenoid. But has any one gotten rid of that and used just the terminals on the new starter. I'm using one out of an 1995 5.0L That way the fenderwell will be cleaner. det0326 179 Report post Posted March 19, 2022 You need the old solenoid for the 12v cranking voltage if you still have the OEM style ignition.
Vicfreg 773 Report post Posted March 20, 2022 Yes, but det0326 is right. There is another wire on the stock solenoid (the brown "I" wire) that goes to the stock ignition system. The aftermarket and Ford Duraspark ignitions do not use that wire. I believe the purpose is to provide 12v to the coil when cranking. After that the famous "pink" resistor wire provides voltage to the coil I have a stock 5.0 starter on my '68, and a mini starter on my '70.
