Automatic Shifter Indiacaor

I'm putting my car back together and noticed something. How does the shifter indicate what gear you are in (P,R,N,D,2,1) I can see where the light bulb goes but I'm confused on what actually shows through that little glass plate. On mine it looks like a small plastic piece is attached to the shift lever but it looks like something, like an arrow or something, has broken off. If nothing is in there then is it the shift lever's position when it lines up with the corresponding gear? I'm confused on this. Thanks in advance.
