Advise needed frome those experts on 9 inches If he is measuring from axle flange to axle flange and the rear end is still together you can't get a straight measurement because of the center chunk is in the way. So it would probably measure something less than 60" probably more like 59-1/2 which is the stock width for 69 mustang. I am not sure what the stock width of the torino tho. If it truly measures 60" thats not bad it would work but I'm betting it is a little less that 60". As to whether to buy it or not it would depend on how much he wants for it, what is in it like positive trac. 28 or 31 spline axles, etc. good luck Dave
MikeStang 247 Report post Posted January 12, 2015 Put 2 straight edges up from the axle flanges and pull a tape between them, thats the only way to get a real reading with the rear end together. shold be 64.25 From axle flange to axle flange for a standard 69 rear end. If not that would be another 200 or so.

det0326 179 Report post Posted January 12, 2015 How can i tell what gear it has? Without open it Sometimes there is a tag on one of the studs on the center section but I have found that some of these old rear ends have had a gear change and the tag not changed. You can count how many times the pinion turns when the axle makes one complete turn and calculate it pretty close.
juit 34 Report post Posted January 14, 2015 OK it was a torino 70, 61 inches so its 1 inch extra on each side add some pictures of the differential in the first post
SparkyGT 26 Report post Posted January 14, 2015 so if the perches are in the correct spot, you can use with some offset rims, otherwise figure cost of offset rims, versus finding a proper width one. i picked up a early t-bird big tube housing all rebuilt for $500 a few years back, a buddy also picked up one close to same price with a posi

If your are going to upgrade the 9" with disc brakes different gear etc. you can probably get a bare housing a little cheaper. I have seen bare 9" housing in my area for 75.00 but if they have all the internals there are around 250.00 and usually don't have the gear you want either. The tag is hard to make out, I can make out a 00 but can't tell what is in front of it but it could be a 3.00 gear which is not bad for non overdrive tranny's. det0326 179 Report post Posted January 14, 2015 I have a t5 tranny you would probably be happier with maybe like a 3.50 or 3.73 or so with a t5.
