Bossed 10 Report post Posted November 30, 2014 Hey guys, I wanted to know if anyone runs or has tried to use a 4R70W transmission in a 69/70 Mustang without cutting the firewall or transmission tunnel?
Bossed 10 Report post Posted November 30, 2014 The combo is a 70 Mach, 460 with TCI front suspension. Wondering if anyone has this setup or knows of one, with 4R70W?
MikeStang 247 Report post Posted December 1, 2014 Yes have a few thousand miles on mine now, didnt even have to use a hammer on any part of the sheet metal to make it fit

sportsroof69 13 Report post Posted December 4, 2014 A big block 460? Or a Dart based 460 small block?
MikeStang 247 Report post Posted December 4, 2014 I really dont see why you couldnt run one without cutting on the firewall, you might have to beat on it a bit but I have plenty room all the way around my 4R70 with my small block
Bossed 10 Report post Posted December 5, 2014 It's a big block 460, Kaase P51's. The front suspension was initially ordered for a Coyote swap, but after sitting the 5.0 into place, it was evident the 4R70W would require tunnel modification, which he didn't want. He already had a 460/4R70W in a Fox body, so he decided to put the Coyote in the Fox, and put the 460 in the 70. The motor mounts will be changed for the big block. LindenBruce 27 Report post Posted December 5, 2014 Well, I have an FE with an adaptor plate for my AOD and it fits..... barely. I had to spot face the two top bell housing bolt holes and remove about 1/4" of material to gain some room. Having done than I have about 3/16" clearance between the top bell housing bolts and the firewall. I would image you will be facing a very similar issue. As the 4R70W is a later version of the AOD. Both share a lot of common parts. In fact, I have some 4R70W parts INSIDE my AOD to allow me to install a few extra clutches in several of the clutch packs. B. samwe 0 Report post Posted December 21, 2014 It will fit with a coyote and no tunnel or firewall mods if you are not using the TCI setup. TCI sets the engine up and forward too much.
