RPM 1,190 Report post Posted January 22, 2013 (edited) Hey guys, I used Permatex red high tack gasket sealant between the pumpkin and housing. I've never had a problem with gaskets before, but I got a leak I can't live with The leak is on the bottom center at the gasket, not from the studs. The surfaces were clean and smooth, with good coverage of sealant. What brand did you use, and are there any tricks I should use. Thanks. LindenBruce 27 Report post Posted January 22, 2013 Well, if there were ANY contaminants on either surface then it could leak. The stuff you used is usually pretty good. I prefer to use silicon sealer at this location due to the irregular surface of the rear end housing, not the pumpkin. The problem now is you have to pull the axles to get the center section out to clean it all up and try again. That's the bummer part. B
RPM 1,190 Report post Posted January 23, 2013 (edited) Yep, bummer it is. I did wipe down surface with acetone first. Oh well, at least I'm working on a Mach I and not a chebby. Edited January 23, 2013 by RPM
LindenBruce 27 Report post Posted January 23, 2013 The Chebby would be easier if it was a diff cover like on a 10,12 or 14 bolt unit. No axles to pull. But then your tools would prolly turn tail and run at the sight of having to dig in to the Chebby. Bruce
RPM 1,190 Report post Posted January 23, 2013 You made me laugh there Bruce. I'll take a Ford 9 inch over a chebby any day. Bob

DRASTiK 22 Report post Posted January 23, 2013 The right stuff. Agreed. (and it's a product name, not a smartalic remark, lol)

RPM 1,190 Report post Posted January 24, 2013 Thanks guys, I do appreciate it. Crap, last time I said "I do" I got into a hell of a mess. Bob
LindenBruce 27 Report post Posted January 24, 2013 Yeah, those types of "I do's" can get expensive. B
RPM 1,190 Report post Posted January 27, 2013 (edited) So I was a bit leery about using some off brand named The Right Stuff. Was a bit surprised when I went to buy it and saw it was made by Permatex. Do you guys use it without a gasket like the instructions read? RPM 1,190 Report post Posted January 29, 2013 Thanks SR69. Yeah, I don't get out much. Bob
Project69 10 Report post Posted February 4, 2013 A little late to the conversation, but Permatex make a great sealant for gear oils that works very well if you can't find "the right stuff" (great by the way). Comes in a silver tube and can be found at most parts stores. I found it at Advance Auto.
sportsroof69 13 Report post Posted February 5, 2013 Just to add, I don't use The Right Stuff on my intake, because it works so good that the intake is very difficult to remove.
