How can I tell if I have the right starter

Recommended Posts

FYI:

69 Fastback, 289, Large Bellhousing, 164 tooth flywheel, 4spd toploader.

The drivetrain is currently rebuilt and out of the car.

I gave up assuming that the PO had all the right parts.

I do have a starter in the boxes of part received, but how do I know if it's gonna fit before putting the motor in.

I've read that there are 2 types of starters with different noses. Not sure on which one I have.

Thanks!

The ring gear on an original 60s-70s 289/302/351 flywheel is closer to the block than is one on a flexplate, so the starter on a manual trans car has a shorter nose (and throw) than does an automatic. Around 1982, they went to a common depth 157 tooth flywheel that matches an automatic flexplate. Since you have a 164 tooth flywheel, you need an early style short nose starter. If nothing else, take it to an auto parts store and ask to compare it to a known starter.
