Paint advice: Color, Stripes, Clear timing

Recommended Posts

Howdy gents,

Am painting a restomod-coupe with a 2-stage system (PPG). Grabber Orange w/Black stripes is the plan, followed by Clear.

It's my understanding that one must apply the clear coat within a very short timeframe (like a matter of hours) to promote best adhesion and stabilize the coat underneath. Other than the logistical issues of getting all this done in one day (with one gun and a garage), I have a more pressing question:

We want to do black Shelby Stripes on top of the Orange. It seems like a disaster waiting to happen to tape the color coat within just an hour or so of painting, spray the black, remove the tape, and get ready for clear. Must one really jam all this activity into a short window?

Wouldn't the tape simply pull up the uncured color coat?

I'm wondering how to space out these activities w/out compromising the stability of the overall system.

Any comments, ideas are most welcome. We've committed to doing this ourselves, so ideas like "let the pro's do it" are already well understood.

Thanks!

Tom

Usually the Clear Coat must be applied within 24 hours. You should be able to put Tape on the Base Coat in less than one hour with no problems. PPG should furnish you with the Tech Sheets that explain everything you need to know. If you can, post some pics as you make progress. Good Luck!

Tom on PPG Deltron most coats go on with a 5-10 minute flash between coats so 3 coats you will apply in 15 to 30 minutes max @ say 80 degrees.(roughly) you have a 20-40 min flash time before laying out your stripes after your last coat. Lay your stripes out then spray your Black basecoat then after say 5 minutes you`ll want to remove tape, then by the time you have taken the time to remove all taping etc you will be ready to shoot your clear. The important thing to remember is to have your act together BEFORE you step into the booth on your plan of attack! Also your concern about the tape pulling, just be sure you use the right tape, your local supplier should set u up with everything. GOOD LUCK

Hi Tom. I still think that all Deltron Base's need to be Clear Coated within 24 hours. Here's a Link where you can get the Tech Sheets for any of PPG's Deltron Products. They should answer any questions that you might have. Copy and Paste in in your Browser Window. Hope the Link works.

When your body shop sells you nice correct tape for your stripes keep some thing in mind. Don't let anything touch the sides of the roll. Meaning hang on to it or set it down on clean surfaces only. Setting it on the ground, or work bench with pick up crap in the adhesive and cause your tape lines to be fuzzy.
