chillininnh 21 Report post Posted May 28, 2008 What causes the fuel guage to act this way. Before I took the car apart the guage would never read more than about half a tank. Installed a new tank and sender, rewired the entire car, and now it goes straight past full when the key is turned on.
jag 10 Report post Posted May 29, 2008 I would say you probably have lost the ground to the fuel meter. That will make the guages peg. JAG
jerry69 10 Report post Posted May 29, 2008 There's also a ground strap that runs from the intake manifold to the firewall... in case you did some engine work...
Justafordguy 10 Report post Posted May 29, 2008 Mine stays pegged half the time and E the other half. Sound like a bad ground?
SELLERSRODSHOP 13 Report post Posted May 29, 2008 almost sounds like the wire that runs to the sending unit is pinched or grounded somewhere. thats one test for whether the guage works, remove the wire from the sending unit & ground it. the guage will peg all the way. check the wire routing . also might unhook the wire at the sending unit & check the guage with the key on. if it pegs still, the wire could be pinched "upstream" & showing a "full" ohm reading to the guage. jerry69 10 Report post Posted May 29, 2008 While you have the wire off the sending unit take a volt-ohm meter and put one probe on the connector where the wire was and the other probe to the round part of the sending unit where it attaches to the tank... The sending unit should measure 8-12 ohms full and 70-73 ohms empty. So a short to ground would show over full, just like "SellersRodshop" stated.
