wantahertzdonut 10 Report post Posted December 15, 2006 I started last night (finally) replacing my aging rusty gas tank, complete with its leaky CA emissions equipment that prevented me from filling the tank and stinking the car up like gasoline. I'm finishing tonight or tomorrow and if the roads are clean I'll even have it out on the road. Enjoy the pics!

GreaseMonkey 102 Report post Posted December 16, 2006 haha i was thinking of getting a pic of myself in my trunk like that too while i have my tank out was that emmissions stuff required on all CA cars? mine didnt have it, so im guessing either it wasnt required, someone took it out before me, or my car wasnt an orignal CA car. is there any good way of keeping a gas tank from rusting from the inside? im pretty sure thats what happened with mine. looked OK from the outside, but the smell of gas kept getting stronger untill one day i got frustrated and took a look underneath again... and there was gas dripping down the bottom. I took it out and turns out it was cracked at the seam:cursing: yeh after that i figured i could use a new one lol

wantahertzdonut 10 Report post Posted December 18, 2006 Here's pics of the finished tank. I have a new filler neck in there but it doesn't quite match up with my taillight panel. I'm going to have to 'customize' it. You can see the scale I got out of the tank when I drained it which is why I replaced it.

wantahertzdonut 10 Report post Posted December 18, 2006 cool so since your in ohio are you gonna replace all that calipornia evap stuff? just curious nice car by the way is that you or your son standing in the trunk? if its you ..your too young to have that nice of a mustang lol I would like to put it back on but there are fittings that broke off and spilled gas out when I took a hard right turn. I'm going to just leave it off and put it aside. And yes, that's me! was that emmissions stuff required on all CA cars? mine didnt have it, so im guessing either it wasnt required, someone took it out before me, or my car wasnt an orignal CA car. is there any good way of keeping a gas tank from rusting from the inside? im pretty sure thats what happened with mine. looked OK from the outside, but the smell of gas kept getting stronger untill one day i got frustrated and took a look underneath again... and there was gas dripping down the bottom. Unless you have a plastic lined tank, I don't know of a way to prevent rust. You'll get condensation in there over time which will start it. I painted mine just to make it look better but also to prevent any rust from starting on the outside and working its way in. I don't know how long it'll last but anything is better than what I had. bnickel 10,004 Report post Posted December 18, 2006 POR-15 has a gas tank sealer that you can use to prevent rust or you can take it to your local radiator shop, they can usually do it for you as well. be warned both of those options are fairly expensive and cost about as much as a new tank. still though, once i get the cougar i plan on installing a new tank and having it sealed by the local rad shop. Spoofty 10 Report post Posted December 19, 2006 I had a rad shop do mine about 10 years ago. They dipped it in some kind of acid to clean it then put a rubberized coating on the inside. That cost $40 but that was 10 years ago. I was going to do the same on Ponygurls car but they don't do it any more. You can get kit to do it yourself at The Eastwood Company. http://eastwood.resultspage.com/search?p=Q&ts=custom&w=gas+tank

Pakrat 1,043 Report post Posted December 19, 2006 You can also add dry gas to the tank to eliminate the condensation every now and again. I'm not sure what yours looked like before you painted it but mine was a nice natural looking aluminum color.
