  1. It was a great feeling....BUT...and there always seems to be a 'but' lately....The trans guy figures there is something wrong in the tranny... So now tomorrow it goes OUT of the paint shop and over to the tranny shop !!! Man if it aint one thing its another !!! I think tomorrow I'll take a car time out and go golfing... I sure know how to pick all the frustrating hobbies !! At this pace Im gonna have a hear attack by next Tuesday !!
  2. The last day of the car in my home garage. It's now at my shop and the final coat of primer is on ! I still have a few small pieces I will work on at home, but the car is gone...My wife and neighbors are very happy !! As for the trans, the guy from the tranny shop is coming to the shop tonight to look at it. I hope its nothing too serious. I think I just over filled it.....At least I hope that's all it is !!!
  3. I started it up again and now I have reverse but nothing else. I may now have too much fluid in the trans. There is a tube on the trans that fluid is blowing out of, I believe its the breather tube ???? I have the guy from the tranny shop coming over tomorrow night, hopefully he can figure it out.... On the plus side she fires right up whenever I go to start it !!!:shifty:
  4. OK, so I started it up again and now I have reverse but nothing else. I may now have too much fluid in the trans. There is a tube on the trans that fluid is blowing out of, I believe its the breather tube ???? I have the guy from the tranny shop coming over tomorrow night, hopefully he can figure it out.... On the plus side she fires right up whenever I go to start it !!!:shifty: As for the body, I have it all blocked out and the little spots that required a little putty are all completed. I gave it a panel by panel wipe to see how it looks wet and it is looking very straight. One last blast of 2K primer tonight and hopefully into the paint shop this week end:thumbup1:
  5. Yes there was. I remember lining up the converter to the flexplate for the drain hole on the converter. How much fluid does an FMX take ? 10 - 12 L ???
  6. The converter was on the trans when I got it back from the tranny shop. They had a keeper holding it in place. I put the trans and motor together out of the car. It went together very easily. They told me when I fired up the car to pour 3L's in the trans before I start it. Then slowly pour in the rest, cycling through the gears, until it catches. Well I now have about 10L's in it and still no 'catch'. Im a little leary to pur any more in. Too much can't be good....
  7. Well I have one side blocked out and it feels really good. I started on the side that I thought would need the most work so 'hopefully' the worst is behind me. That being said, anyone who has done the block sanding on these cars knows what the hood and fender tops can be like. I've run the motor up twice now and it sounds great. The new issue is the trans will not engage. I have 10L of tranny fluid in it but still no luck. Time to call the trans shop....
  8. Still no luck on the trans engaging...Gonna call the tranny shop today and see what they say... If it ain't one thing its another !!!
  9. Well I ran it up for 25 Min today at 1500. All went well. The only problem is the trans. It won't seem to engage. I have have about 8-9L of trans fluid in but still no luck.....
  10. Should I do it again ? 5 min @ 2000 ? will it matter now ?
  11. A huge step forward....Fired her up for the first time today !!! Fired right up and sounds GREAT. I have taken the week off to get her painted. Things are happening now !!!
  12. It runs !!!! Wow she fired up right away. I had to put some crappy Accel plug wires on it, the MSD wires I had were the wrong ones. It sounds great. Straight headers right now so the vid sounds a bit wonky but in person.....WOW !! I ran it at 1500 for 5 min.... the neighbors loved it...hahaha !!!! Thank you to everyone who gave me their advice !! It ALL came in handy !!
  13. One last query... Tomorrow is the day !! One question I have is, Why straight water in the cooling system ? Would it not make sense to have a 50/50 mix ? First you have the lubricant for the water pump, And does not the glycol in the antifreeze/coolant keep the 'water' running cooler, making it a better choice? The boiling point for glycol is much higher than straight water. So why straight water ?
  14. Thanks !... Now if I only had the same confidence in getting this engine running !!:scared:
  15. Great !! Thank you very much for all your help !! I will let ya know if it works out !!!
  16. I was just making sure...remember...dumb painter !! I play with colors (See pic) not grease !! So if all is correct, the engine 'should' fire up with the timing at TDC....Then I adjust as required, is that right ?
  17. I doesn't sound silly...I appreciate your concern !! And I plan on being VERY patient on the initial fire up...I have far too much $$$$ in this to get overly excited. I am trying to get a mechanic to come to the house for the first start, but I would like to have everything in place and correct. The place that built the engine gave me a bottle of stuff to put in the oil for initial start up, not sure if its Zinc, I will have to check later when I get home. I have placed a oil pressure guage on the engine (see pic in previous post) so I can watch it under the hood. I will leave the carb as it is. When I read... "Make absolutely sure you're on the compression stroke and get the distributor pointing to the #1 plug terminal..." What you mean is, in the dist. make sure that the rotor is pointing to the #1 cylinder terminal on the cap ?? As for the comppression stroke, I have pulled the plug on #1 Cyl. and poked a straw down the hole and the piston is at the top, and the valves are closed. This should be compression right?
  18. Thanks for all the help....!! I have figured out most of the octopus ... I still have 4 wires I can't figure out !! 1 has a rubber female plug that goes into the voltage regulator 1 has a small canister that looks like it just bolts to the fender 2 look like ground leads ???? Any help would be greatly appreciated !!!:helpsmilie:
  19. The carb is brand new. Thanks for all the great info !!! Please keep it coming !!! When you say that..." Now look at the back of the distributor housing. You will see that there are 2 rectangular blocks adjacent to each other. The one at the top right has "12127" cast into it." Will that be in the MSD distributor as well or just the Ford distributor? Also, are you saying that the engine should fire up the way it is (at TDC... See pic....) Then adjust the timing ? Again...sorry if these are stupid questions....
  20. Well Here I go..... I am picking up an oil pump priming tool today and have almost all of the engine components back in place. I will hopefully have the rad and hoses all back in tonight and the wires all connected (Hopefully correctly) Now keep in mind that I am a dumb car painter NOT a mechanic !!! So all this is Greek to me. In that vain I have a few questions that I need to know... Im sure their silly questions, but again, Im a dumb painter !!:tongue_smilie: So here we go... I have not yet installed the oil pressure sending unit...where the hell does it go !!??? (See pic below for my guess) What is the best oil to use for the initial start ? (5W30,10W30...) ? The engine is at TDC, the dist. seems to drop right in just fine. How do I know if its in properly ? Basicall, what are the proper steps to take to get this thing to fire up? Engine Info... 1969 351W block 351 C Heads (2V) Edelbrock 7183 Intake Edelbrock 1406 Carb KB110 Pistons (10:1 +/-) MSD Ready Run Dist. Double Roller Chain Cam Specs Intake = 193@050 .467 Lift Exhaust = 208@050 .467 Lift Lobe Center = 110* Center Line = 106* (+/- 1*) Whew.... Does any of this make sense ?? :surrender: My head hurts now.... Again, all I want to do is hear this baby run !! So any help would be greatly appreciated !!!
  21. Make the image smaller. Open it in MS paint, goto the 'Image' tab on the tool bar. Then select 'strech/scew' (or resize/scew...depending on your windows ver) once there change the image size. The you can post the pic.
  22. Its not exactly painted but it is a step closer !!! Finally all the body work is done and the car is in primer....Next step is a few small pieces to finish then get the beast under the hood to take a breath !!!:helpsmilie:
  23. Well I have accomplished a bit in the last 2 weeks... The gas tank is in and the fuel lines are all hooked up as far as the inner fender. I ran a thick bead of Sika-Flex around the base of the gas tank to seal it to the body. That way any exhaust fumes can't get through. I then sprayed the inner trunk and top of the tank with some Pro-Form undercoating. It looks really good. I finally got all the body work done and finished lining up all the doors and hood to where I am reasonably happy. I also finally got a trunk lid I could work with and got it all stripped and primed. The wife is REALLY happy with me spraying primer in her garden !!:whistling:
