If I were doing it, I'd fab the filler pieces needed, trim the hole in the new door panel, skin the door with the new panel, then weld the filler piece. i would want the extra strength of the complete door for less warpage. The weld from the outside if done slowly with small spot type welds, will clean up nicely with little filler and will be plenty strong. Just my 2¢.
