alex 18 Report post Posted May 17, 2012 Thought I might post this here as well. I have a 1969 351W with the stock power steering. When I bought the car, the power steering was fairly intermittent. I replaced the power steering pump and the power steering was fine. After about a month or two the power steering belt would squeal on a warm start for 5 to 10 seconds. Believing the power steering pump was bad, I replaced it only to have the squealing still occur. Additionally, if I drive the car hard enough the power steering will go out. It does return after the car cools down. I have changed the belt of course as well as flushed the fluid. What could be the cause of this issue? I don't want to randomly replace parts until I fix the issue.
LoneWolf2U 136 Report post Posted May 17, 2012 Look into something plugging the pressure side. A hard drive and the pump is going into bypass mode.
alex 18 Report post Posted May 17, 2012 Thanks for the reply. Could the restriction be in the control valve (the pump is new so assuming there is no restriction in the pressure side of the pump)? If yes, how would I test the control valve for a restriction if it is not visibly apparent?
