Type "J" Rack Question

Recommended Posts

Hello All,

Does anyone know what the difference or what cars these two styles of "J" type rack and pinions go too? I circled the area of difference. One has it's hookup ports at an angle and the other is more straight.

I just got a second hand Randalls Rack that has the style I called Straight and It needs new fluid lines. I could make my own but I figured if I could find a set somewhere I could save some effort but I need to know what to ask for.

Thanks,

Jim

I thought Randall's racks were from about a 94 Chevy Cavaliar. I did not know there was a difference in what Randalls supplied. I will double check, but that is what I recall. The rack was used on a lot of GM cars from that era other than Cavaliar, so your rack could be from one of the similar models.

You might go to a parts store and see what the Cavaliar hoses are like.

That's what I did and how I started noticing that there was a difference. The attached picture is for a 94 Cavalier from Car Steering Wholesale and it is has angled hookups. It is a subtle difference, but the lines for the two would be different. I'm probably going to have to fab my own since I don't think auto places store just the lines.

Thanks,

Jim
