Fastback quarter window frame and latch removal

Recommended Posts

I would like to remove the quarter windows from their frames and also remove the latch from the window so that I can tint the glass in a more professional manner. Does anyone have experience, tips or advise on this? Thanks.

Pulling the glass from the frames can sometimes be tough. You might apply some windex (glass cleaner) to the area between the frame and glass, soaking the rubber material that is between them. You then need to pull (with constant pressure) and try to seperate the glass from the frame. All that holds these together is the squeezing pressure of the frame onto the glass with the rubber tape between. To reinstall, (after applying the tint) you need to get some new glass setting tape from a glass shop. Take in an old piece to get the correct thickness. You buy the tape in a width of about 1 1/4 to 1 1/2" wide and ? in length. Cut a piece of the new tape a little longer than needed, spray with windex and shove together (it will take some grunting). Let set for a few hours, trim off excess with a razor blade.

The latch is removed by using a pin punch and punching out the retaining pin in the base of the latch handle allowing it to come off, loosen the nut and remove the remainder of the latch assembly.
