No, there is a circuit in the dash that checks the cubic inches of your engine and the tach will not work with anything under a 302.

 

The tachs in non-woodgrain dashes will work with a six however.

The tach dash requires a different harness that the non-tach dash. The non-tach harness can be modified to work, see http://www.boss302.com/tach.htm.

 

However you bring up a very good question! The tach is going to count pulses to determine the RPM & with the 6 cyl. it will most likely be incorrect. SO my vote is it may work but would not be accurate.

I have never seen a 6 cylinder factory tach car, so I have no idea if the actual tach will work or not. Later tachs in the 90s are modular and will work with any engine.
