Newbie w/ Brake issues!!

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone! I recently found a '69 Mustang coupe (73,000 on the clock!) sitting behind a barn in some guys field, after an excited non-thorough look over I paid him $200 for it and had it towed home. The car is wimbledon white w/ red kiwi interior. 302ci v8 and c4 automatic, 8" conventional rear end, power brakes (disc/drum), and power steering.

Problems with the car: non-runnng (#1 cylinder GONE), interior needs replaced, dent on passenger side quarter panel, and the front brakes were disassembled. Which brings me to why I'm posting in the tech section. All that was on the front end as far as brakes was: spindle, dust shield, rotor, and some bracket. The calipers (not sure if they were even for this car) were in the trunk.

So I went out and got new rotors ($$$), calipers, pads, rubber hose($$), and bearings. Had the dust shield and bracket blasted and painted them. Now, I can not for the life of me figure out how to mount the damn calipers! I know I am missing various nuts and bolts. Can someone please take a look at these pictures I have and clue me in on exactly what it is that I'm missing? What I need to buy and where to get it?

Also, in pic 1 there is a weird metal bracket thing that only came with the passenger side caliper, the drivers side does not have it.

Side note, I basically just have the stuff mocked up there for the sake of a picture and because I was excited to see what it'd look like with new stuff on it. :pinch: PLEASE HELP!

Thank you.

Nathan

There should be two weird metal brackets.. one for each side.

Here is a link to the assembly page for the brakes. Some bleed through on the scan but it should help. The bottom of the page has the disc info.

I got luck I guess and found a pair of calipers on ebay that included the mounting kit, bolts, clips, etc. I did break a clip though so be careful.

Spoofty, yes I just realized today that they are Granada style. This after I spent $65 (Napa, eh) for a rotor, $25 (each) for calipers, etc.. I know I can't use the calipers, is the rotor okay though? I have it mounted up there (obviously) and spins and everything just fine. How can I tell what year Granada the parts came off of, or does it matter? Can I just go pick up some calipers (rotors too?) for a 79 Granada and call it done?

Should I return the rotor and swap it for the Granada rotors?

Is there anything else that I may be missing that you can possibly tell from the pictures?

This has really thrown me for a loop, I wonder what else is off on this car....

the granada rotors are different, they use larger inner and outer wheel bearings and the center register of the rotor is also larger. however, it's possible that the spindles are actually correct and just the caliper brackets are granada style as the brackets will interchange.

I had bought bearings for a 69 Mustang w/ disc brakes and they were too small (twice), finally I took the "original" one in with and got the right one. Also, I think someone must've swapped in the front end stuff becuase when I bought the car and looked in the trunk there was extra control arms and steering stuff complete with spindles & drums.

Mine are actually Mavrick brakes but I got Granada brakes for my wifes car and they are the same. I think I asked for 76 Mavrick parts but 79 Granada should also be correct.

Napa should be nice enough to let you exchange for the right parts. I found that none of the Mavrick parts I bought had any core charges.

My calipers were only $14. Don't forget the hardware kit and retaining bolt. I was told to use anti seize compound on the slides as it would not wash off that easily.

Here are the pics I got this morning anyway.

Good luck!!
