Fuel Pump Question

Does the mechanical fuel pump lever make contact directly with the camshaft or is there a pin that is between the lever and the camshaft? I'm replacing my fuel pump and unfortunately I don't have a manual.

 

Wouldn't want anything bad to happen!

Okay, I got it in, but the engine is running seriously erratic. I have to hold the gas pedal down to keep it running. Any ideas why it could be running that bad?
