  1. Back to work on the old Horse...And No, Im not talking about my mother-In-Law !!

I have to shim the UCA's so I may as well remove the front fenders to get in there easier, so that's the hope for this week/weekend. Also the hood and cowl are coming off and heading back to my paint shop. I've decided to go with the black on the hood. It will have blue pearl in it so it will actually look black until the light hits it, which will give off a blue shimmer. I have a Mach hood scoop so I'll do all that at the same time. Im also thinking of painting the inner headlight pots and the taillight panel the same black. Like the Boss 302's had (See Pic for the headlight idea). Any thoughts ???? I don't see many like that. I like to be different !

I know there was somewhere on here that had the measurements for the blakout hoods. I just can't seem to find it !!

  2. What rust inhibitor or primer should I use?

If your going down to bare metal be sure to use an etch primer first. Then a good 2 part on top of that. Dupont has a really good etch primer...I can't remember the product code right now.

As for rust inhibitors, there are lots out there. Some like POR15, I used Rust Mort. I also used Duponts Rust Not on all the frame.

    Good Luck !!

  3. Like others in this thread, I was where you are about a year ago. Check out my thread,I have a lot of info there. My advice is, if you do decide to do the work yourself, be sure to do the following...

    • Take LOTS of pictures !! LOTS !! Of everything from different angles.
    • Measure EVERYTHING 3 times before ya cut anything off.
    • Be sure ya have the right parts ON HAND before ya cut anything off. I can't count how many times I got the wrong parts delivered to me.
    • Be patient...This will take longer than you think !! If you get frustrated with something, stop, take a breather, go back to it later.
    • Ask a lot of questions on this site. The knowledge here is priceless.
    • DON'T start too many different jobs on the car. finish what ya started before ya move on. I got overwhelmed a few times having too many things on the go.
    • NEVER...and I can not overstate this enough...NEVER weld drunk !! you'll just wind up cutting it off and doing it right when ya sober up...believe me !!

Good luck with whatever decision ya make. I will say there is nothing better than looking at the finished (Or almost finished:whistling:) car knowing YOU did the work !!

  4. I still haven't done anymore work on the car and probably won't now until after Christmas...Which is only a month away !!:scared:.

Anyway, I was looking back over this thread and noticed that a year ago today I almost burnt down my house welding in the drivers side floor pan !!

I gotta say, I am very happy with the way the build has gone in just over a year. When I started this I was sure that in 6 months I would be done and driving...Well now I'm starting year 2. And yes I have driven her a bit but the build is still not complete to my satisfaction. So I guess what they say is right. Be ready to spend more time and WAY MORE money than you first budget for !!

There have been so many, up's and down's in the past year WRT the resto ! It's great to have this thread to go back and read and re-live some of it.

Many thanks to this site and all who take the time to make it what it is !! And Many thanks to all who have helped with their advice and ideas. Having this has definately made my build much easier !!

  5. Well, Im hoping to get back on the Old Horse soon. Still dealing with some demons but Im working them out slowly....

I think my first winter project will be the repair of the center console. I have the ashtray removed, I will be putting in the gauge pod in its place. The console itself is in so/so shape. There are a few cracks that need repairing and a few chunks taken out of the bottom where it sits on the trans tunnel. Mostly where the original screw holes were. Has anyone tried to fix these consoles ? If so what did ya use for repairing the plastic ? I was considering using fiberglass....

Its really bad where the lid hinge bolts on....

    Thanks for any thoughts/help !!

  6. I had the same issue. It took me a while to get them working. What I did was....

    1. I replaced all the little 'cardboard' backings on the guage posts with rubber pieces. That way they wont breakdown over time.
    2. I cleaned all the leads from the wire harness that plugs into the cluster circut board. I found that there was a few contacts that were corroded and a few were bent.
    3. I replaced the engine guage wire harness. This is the one that goes from the firewall to the guages and coil. The old one had cracks in it. Its a cheap and easy replacement.

Good luck, I know its a very frustrating thing dealing with electrical. I still have a few small issues with lights......

  7. I bought and have used the CD A LOT during my restoration. The word search is great and you can take the laptop into the shop and use it right beside your work. You can blow up the image, to a certain point, to see it better as well. I don't have a lot of room in the shop so having a CD is great. Plus, with the CD, you wont tear the pages or spill grease on it so its unreadable. Just be sure to make a copy of the CD for a backup. And its WAY cheaper than the books..... IMHO go for the CD....

  8. Well after 4 funerals in 5 months Im trying to get back to 'normal'...Whatever that is. Needless to say I have not done much more work on the car. I have discovered, the hard way, that funerals and death in general is very expensive !!

I have driven the car a few times, I have about 200 miles on her. The plates run out today so she's off the road now until the spring.

Things I have to deal with this winter are....

    1. Fix the alignment issue. Im gonna try to shim out the UCA.
    2. With the UCA drop and the 1" drop springs, the front end is just too low, so Im going to have to either replace the springs or use a urathane spacer to give it more height.
    3. Tires and wheels. I would like to go to 17's with either Magnum 500's, Cragar SS's or maybe Center lines.... I may do this before the springs to see if I get any more height out of the larger tires/wheels.
    4. I also want to get the Fiero seats done and installed.
    5. I have the hood scoop so I want to get that painted, and I have decided to go with the black on the hood and tail light panel. It will be gloss black with blue pearl.
    6. There's a few electical issues I still have to resolve.
    7. I bought the Shelby gauge pod for the center console so I will be rebuilding the original console. Its got some cracks and breaks in it and it needs paint.
    8. And finally, the new gasket holding the sending unit in the gas tank leaks:cursing::censored: . So I gotta fix that !!

Thanks to everyone for letting me rant on the forum, and thanks for your heart felt condolences. I do, and will always, miss the loved ones I recently lost. Just remember all to kiss your loved ones, and let them know how much they mean to you. Because you may not be able to say it to them tomorrow.

    B&D Forever....

  9. I don't know if anyone noticed but I have not updated anything for a while. Well, it seems the good Lord had a little more in store for myself and my family. My sister, whom I was so very close to has also passed away. She left us on Oct. 22nd after a long and valiant battle with MS. She was recently diagnosed with lung cancer and could not battle that for very long. She lasted only 4 months. She put up a great fight and I am so proud of her. She was a shinning light in my life and was always very supportive of me. I so very much loved her and miss her so much......I don't know how much more I can take.... God Bless You sweet sis......

...Thanks all for letting me rant.....

  10. I love the way the front end looks however the sway bar is only inches off the ground, and the rack aint much higher. I have the 1" drop springs on it as well as the shelby UCA drop with KYB gas adjust shocks. Is there any way to raise the front a bit without replacing the springs ?

Also, what is the easiest way to Lower the back ?

I am planning on going with 17" wheels in the spring. The ones that are on there now are 14" (P205/70R14- Rears, P195/60R14- Fronts... PO did that NOT me!!)

    Thanks !

  11. So Im going to be putting new wheels and tires on this winter. I was hoping to go with 17" wheels. My front end is sitting VERY low right now, but it only has 14's on it. Will the 17's raise the front end very much ? Also will 17's rub on the fenders when turning ?

Also, I will need new rotors right, what size would you recommend. The fronts are disc and the rears are drum...

    Thanks

    Ken

  12. Thanks again all for your comments....

As for the alignment issues,I did give the alignment shop the specs. Is there a special 'procedure' they need to know about ? The problem is there is no more room for the movement. The eccentric is at full circumference.

I have an export brace installed. It was a bit of a pain to get on but not too bad.

As you can see in the pic, why not just make the eccentric larger?

    Stangme428

What would that kit do to help my issue ? How do you set the camber by eliminating the eccentric ?
