  1. I'm having way too much fun to worry about my birthday.. It's my birthday every time I drive her!!!! There is no clutch.. fan is bolted to waterpump. Got the gauge working.. reinstalled stock sending unit.. Ok.. 10 degrees BTDC.. She's happy in 90F+ days as long as I'm going faster than 35 mph.. she's on the 180F thermostat... city driving she starts heating up.. Did about 120 miles yesterday.. got the gauge working... Did a car show today about 20 miles away.. she was fine when 80F temps going there.. idling to find a spot showed a slight hint of heating up... IR gun say 200F.... Coming home was 95F'ish... was on thermostat except for a couple full throttle blasts.. (was FUN!!) and then idling into the neighborhood... backing her in the garage she got to 210F... Thanks for all the advise! Advancing the timing worked!
  2. I managed to get timing marks on the balancer... borrowed a light.. it was just a few degrees BTDC... moved it to 10 degrees.. idle turned to butter.. Will drive her tomorrow.. Thanks for the help...
  3. Thanks for all the advise.. been on the road.. will take advise and wrench this weekend..
  4. Thanks for the help. I've never heard of recurving a distributor. Is that just a different set of springs? Who sells them?
  5. Ok. I get it now. I've cleaned the balancer.. but can't see any marks.. I've put at TDC and marked with white paint. I'm an old fat guy with bad eyes.. but I really don't see anything there.. Everything is new except P/S pump and starter. Heads rebuilt and hardened seats installed. Stock 2V carb, rebuilt with brass float. She runs pretty good.. just unhappy with anything over 1/2 throttle... backfires.. stumbles.. etc... All ignition replaced except module.. It could be lean.. Not sure how to tell... I did the run in the mixture screws until rough idle and back out 1/2 turn deal...
  6. Raining here all weekend.. :( Used a buffer and metal polish on the rims and stainless caps.. worked awesome.. cause they were just dirty and in pretty good shape... Rear bumper was (is) pretty rough... 15 minutes of this and pretty much looked same.. Did the CokaCola and aluminum foil deal. Couldn't believe how awesome that works!
  7. Not being smart.. asking honest question... If you advance the timing won't it burn more of the air/fuel.. wouldn't that make it hotter? I'm struggling understanding this.. Background. I've owned this car since 1978.. parked in 1983.. just got it running about week and half ago... Money isn't issue for a timing light.. was a pre- response to a person that previously liked to pick a fight.. The marks on the balancer are gone anyway.. Haven't figured out gauges yet.
  8. True.. but I want to stay married :)
  9. Yes.. I did search.. I know new engines like it hot... not 100% sure about old ones... I've read most folks fall into either the 180F or 195F camps. I get that. My temp (and oil) gauges are not working. I have new sending units.. and they have resistance (temp once engine is warm)... So I can't see where the temp needle "should be". I've got a 180F thermostat. Local radiator shop (specializes in older stuff) went through radiator and said it was in very good shape. I took off the installation clips so it was probably the first time off. Timing is where it was last left 33 years ago when I parked it. I have not retarded it yet. I don't have a timing light, have no plans on buying one. On a 85F day after 10 miles of mild city traffic (not real crowded here) it'll be around 205-210 at the thermostat housing... After 30 miles of mild city to cruising 45ish mph.. then sitting in 95F idling for a few minutes it was 225F... Once she's about 210F, can't shut it off and let it sit too long as the gas starts to boil in the carb.. then she's unhappy starting. When it's at 205F at the thermostat housing the upper hose near radiator and top of the radiator is 195ish.. bottom hose about 175-180F.. Factory stock shroud. Factory stock fan (exactly as it was when I parked it). How hot is too hot (can't judge since gauge isn't working)? Bottom end stock.. did have hardened seats put in the head.. TIA
  10. I'm not really a "car show guy".. but I did my first today.. was surreal like everything else... This made me giggle.. Back to being covered up.. :( :(... yeah I know no plastic.. but I had a cat pee on it so plastic until that problem solved... :( :(
  11. Just put her away... logged about 100 miles... and 10,000 smiles... :) :) :) Yes, she still needs help... suspension is starting to make bad noises... surprisingly nothing is leaking.. yet... I need a new throttle cable bad.. shifter needs rebuilding horribly.. can't hardly get into park anymore.. still needs timing and carb adjustments... she idles wonderfully... it's not fast at all.. in fact she's very mad at anything more than half throttle... but the torque is incredible.. quarter throttle and you're at 65mph in no time flat! The turbo mufflers I installed in I think 1980 are gone... the bottoms are completely rusted out... as I backed her into the garage... it reminded me of Christine a bit too much... even my wife said the same.. (the garage door opened and you slowly backed in.. just like Christine)... Biggest issue is hot start problems... the gas boils in the carburetor when she's at temp... today after a nice long run with temps in high 80s and backing her slowly in the garage she was at 210F per IR gun.. you can actually hear the gas boiling in the carb.. the carb was 160F per the same IR gun.. Pretty minor problem.. but we'll fix. About all I can truly say.. it's surreal.. I've had this car before I met my beautiful wife... I courted her in this car..,. it's been covered for 33+ years... it's surreal...
  12. I had a dum. I only ask technical questions in the technical section. Whatever they call the tube that feeds the venturi was plugged. Shame on me for not looking...Used a needle and carb cleaner.. all was good. Had a friend come over and he found the distributor was 1 tooth off.. fired right up!! Still have lots to do.. she don't like hot starts at all.. and she'll backfire over half throttle.. but idles and drives awesome.. seems like she's a bit hot temperature wise.. control valve needs rebuilding.. she's terrifying at 65 mph... but the transmission seems to be happy... It's surreal at best.. Here's something I haven't done since 1983.... Next to my son's car... Glamor shot!
  13. Interweb fights. Whatever. She's alive and running strong!
  14. It is ALIVE!!! carb need rebuilding.. timing was off one tooth... she's back!
  15. Thinking spark is ok. It's hot. I advanced it until it started backfiring through the carb and retarded it until it stopped. It was exactly on the marks I made 30 something years ago... Carb might be messed up.. noticed accelerator pump wasn't moving... pushed on it gently and you could feel something breaking free and then it started moving.. so this weekend I'll yank it and go through the carb again.. it was months ago and the cleaner did make some white aluminum rust on the outside.. might have gunk clogging something up internally. I'm recharged and not giving up!
  16. Poo! I know I've been told what to do. Ain't working. Distributor is not 180 out... tried that. no hit at all.. put back to markings.. had buddy over.. number 1 definitely on compression stroke when number 1 lined up on TDC. About to toss in towel..
  17. I took the day off today. Was using a screwdriver on the solenoid to crank the engine... I marked everything before I unbolted stuff... The burping was with everything marked as it was when i took it apart.. I put on a new timing chain about a year or so before parked.. I'm taking the week off as well.. let's see what happens next weekend.
  18. No matter what I did with timing.. this is the best she'd do.. help.. https://youtu.be/K7RJA6ZLiHY
  19. Whole top end has been replaced. Tonight I hooked up battery and got her to burb on ether in attempt to see if ignition was working. She burbed pretty good and tried her best to fire. Only tried three times. Never backfired thru carb. Ether smelled half burnt at best. Just checking logic... Pull plug to see if spark is weak or hot. Guessing timing is just too retarded? Missing anything?
  20. According to the computer.. it was 103F yesterday and 97F today. It felt like it. It's buttoned up and ready to fire. Just have to flush block, put in high ZDDP oil and see if she lights!! Was just too hot and tired when it came time to pull off dollies and roll outside.. Yes.. I know that's a 1970 sticker on the air cleaner.. it also was NOS and I bought it in probably 1979... Found NOS primary wire (after going to junk yard and splicing together junk on existing one... on top of a 1989 article on Jon Kaase.. think that's a sign for some P38s!
  21. Pictures don't show much progress.. but lots done to get to this place...
  22. Shhhh!!! Momma don't know!!! Heads are in place.. not torqued down.. but it took forever to get the block clean. I'm calling this a win!!
  23. CJ Pony parts has some. Thanks folks! http://www.cjponyparts.com/windshield-wiper-blade-assembly-stainless-steel-w-metal-clip-1969-1970/p/WWB9/
  24. Searched and got goose eggs??? Bought some on line.. won't work... factory plastic is gone..what are folks using for wiper blades???
  25. New tank and sending unit... cheap and plopped in place... Two new horse heads!!! Kinda surprises me.. each are different castings... different numbers.. notice the ridge on the exhaust port for one head and not the other.. Shhhhhhhh!!
