Can it be done while the block is still in the car? I don't have a hoist, or much room in my single car garage - i was hoping to do it from below
it looks like i can drop the crossmember, starter, and be able to work it out from there - anyone ever take one out while it's still in the car?
-
Still no dice on the wire - but i got side tracked with a few other things
Headlight switch replaced and suddenly i have dash lights!
How hard is it to change the oil pan? looks like there is lots of stuff in the way, and "Oil" "Pan" were too short or too common to make the search cut... so i figured i would just add to this thread...My oil drain plug is totally stripped, i can get it finger snug, but anything more than that and it spins around. I'm thinking it's time to just swap the whole thing out.
any thoughts?

Hey gang....does the Alternator gauge always stay in the middle of the gauge - even when the car is off?
On my old CJ and my father inlaws vette the gauge drops to nil when the iggy is off, and ticks a bit with the turn signals etc..
on the stang it seems to always be in the middle...should it move at all when turn signals are on, or when i rev, key off..etc?

Thanks for the kind words!
So far i've gone through and retorqued some things, replaced the auto shifter, fuel filler neck, cleaned, degreased etc.
i'm dripping a little oil from the oil pan plug, probably need a new tranny pan gasket, and i have to swap out the heater core.
after that i need to get a new headlight switch and oil pressure sender...
once i get those things done i'm going to drive the ole gal for a month or so until the weather turns brisk again then form some plan to get it all wrapped up..
I think i'll start at the front, get the suspension redone, hit new exhaust... win the lottery...
-
OK gang! i got the shifter part figured out.. i didn't realize in my excitement to get the ole gal running that i forgot to tighten the point where the shifter bolts up in the bucket....is there a bone head smilie?
The indicator still does not quite line up right - anyone have a fix for that?
-
True - a valid point - having seen some of the previous work done i would be inclined to shoot that theory down too though...
I need to pull the dash out for the heater core... i'll investigate the other side of this nasty wire too. I'll let you all know what i find!!!
-
OK - shifter installed... ran in to two problems
1. the shift position indicator doesn't line up - the red line goes above each letter - like Park is forward past P etc..
2. I can start the car in Neutral, but not park, and it feels as though it's not getting it into park, but it does... tried reving - didn't move etc.. maybe just not all the way? I think i must have moved the linkage while loosening or tightening the shifter - where should that thing be in the scheme of things? should the nut be all the way to one side or the other? when i took it off, it was about a quarter inch toward the rear of the car, but i had to shove in on the shifter to get it to start..

I've been there twice this month, great group. They know their stuff and have a great attitude about tech questions, and just general info and ideas. the shop is great to walk in to... a little bit in disarray..but it keeps your eye moving.. i want that..oh and that.. oh man and two of THOSE...
good group though, prices are decent, and if you live in the area zilcho shipping..

nope. electric choke is workin fine and fully wired with no PO hack.
go fish.
-
Factory non-AC. postive it's not a vert.... sometimes kinda wish i'd held out for one but boy are they hard to find in the rust belt of PA and Ohio..
I think if nobody else chimes in my next bet is to pull off the dash and see where it goes on the other side of the firewall eh?

heres a pic.. Reverse lights work, no wires dangling from the prop valve
it's right about the 11 o'clock position to the throttle cable. single wire coming out, wrapping around the vac to the pwr brake booster.
let me know what you all think
-
Hey guys... found another mystery wire....
Under the hood...to the immediate left of the where the throttle cable comes through the fire wall there is another wire -looks black - poking through by itself...it's got a grommet so looks factory.... It's been cut and wrapped around the brake booster line. something tells me that's not right. ...
anybody know what that goes to?
thanks

I saw some great info on the thermo clutch fans on here.. i think long term i'll go that route.
i tried to hook up the shoroud with a 5 blade fan i also found (trunk is full of spare parts...) but the bottom of the shroud hits the fan... same with the four blade... is the rad to high or the engine too low? :whistling: and how do i figure out a baseline? i may cruise down to Laurel Mtn Mustang and hope they can figure out what i've got going on..

Hey Folks
As i'm getting familiar with this Grande - i noticed that the fan blades on the cooling fan are pretty jacked up. like someone 'massaged' them to fit..and really close to those lower cooling lines on the radiator...
The fan on there is blue and silver, 6 blade flex fan
I have a nice looking glossy 4 blade OEM fan.
Radiator is a 3 core on a 69 grande 302 -
I assume that with a shroud the OEM one is cool to use...hehe..cool..
Is there any magic trick to changin the fan? unbolt and rebolt?

Your fuel float is probably cracked and full of fuel, therefore it won't float. It's an easy fix if you have the tank very near empty. The factory connectors for the light are not spade connectors, so I think it is a repair or a left over wire from a previous modification. Check it for voltage as you operate the light switch and see when it comes hot. This should help you know where/if to hook it up.good call. same thing happened on my CJ. i traced wires for a month until i finally pulled the (*&)(*&*&**Q)(*!* thing again and realized the float was full of fuel...

Definitely good advice for a zealous newbie. There is some leaking etc. the engine was rebuilt a couple years ago, then it did some sitting. i'm going to go through and re-snug a few things.. i saw some oil around one of the manifold bolts, tranny pan is marking it's territory etc..
-
Nope. it's a California car originally. Fella brought it over from Cali to PA about 2 years ago and now has some serious rheumatoid arthritis so he sold it...
so far there are a few little leaks - heater core, tranny pan, and oil pan plug drips a touch... need to add some gauges - maybe a new cluster,
The fuel gauge is the only one not working at all.
floor pans are awesome, body is awesome. needs some interior work, a little clean up in the steering and some solid engine dress up. the engine was rebuilt but they didn't paint the block or anything like that.
man i cant wait to get into this thing
thanks guys

Have you guys done this on the interior and exterior/underbody or strictly underbody? I used Durabak on the interior of my jeep CJ and the stuff has lasted extremely well.
I just pulled the carpet on my mustang and the floors look great, now i'm trying to figure out what to use to keep them that way.
-
Ok, at the risk of wearing out my welcome -newbie- free time; here's a couple more i couldn't find exactly with the search:
1. Ripped out the carpet - floors look awesome - what have you all used to keep them that way? any kind of herculiner etc?
2. i want to go through and retorque everything - anyone know the torque sequence for the intake manifold, or transmission pan?
(shop manuals are on the way)
Again.. thanks!

Excellent call on the bulb mount! found where the mystery wire went. Thanks everyone for the help!
I've got a huuuuge list of stuff to figure out on this ole gal.. i appreciate all the help so far..

awesome. thanks S!
i'll probably sit tight until some of the parts catalogs i ordered roll in so i can look for the bushings and that sort o' stuff...
-
nope, all the lights are working - the fuel gauge; however, is not. I haven't crawled underneath yet with the ole test light to psych it out. I dont even see anything back there for this wire to connect to...
-
I have the whole assembly. I've got the carpet out and i've looked at everything but decided to hit the forum before i start pulling pieces out.
how do i adjust the Neutral start switch?
if there's nothing tricky about it i'll probably crank it out this week, once some of my other parts roll in.

As i'm looking into the interior options...anybody know where to find brushed aluminum panels for the clock surround and door panels and console? i dig the brushed gauge cluster JME makes..but everythings gotta match up when i'm done..
Anyone know where to find them, or have pictures of their own?
