Adapter pate for Edelbrock 1406 carb

I plan to use and Edelbrock 1406 carb on my Edelbrock Performer 351C intake and I have a couple of questions. The install guide says I need to use an adapter plate #2732 when going to a dual plane manifold (which I think is what the Performer is. Looking at it thoug it looks like its just a flat plate that might provide extra sealing surface. I will be running a 1/4" fiber spacer with gaskets on top and bottom. Do I really need this adapter plate they mention?

Looking at the base of the carb and the mounting on the intake, I think it might be solely for sealing. I thought the Performer had a larger mounting flat area than that.
