maleah 17 Report post Posted April 24, 2012 I have a 69 351w. When I take the meter to the positive side of the coil I get around 14.8. When I test the negitive side i get 15, when i increase rpms, the volts go up to about 16. Is this normal? Every other reading from the battery, the alternator and before the coil all read around 14.6. Thanks for any input.
Ricks 70 stang 13 Report post Posted April 24, 2012 Check your ground from battery to the engine block. My 351w was over charging at around 16 volts and i chased it down to too much paint on the block where the ground wire attaches. It doesn't cost anything to check this out. maleah 17 Report post Posted April 25, 2012 (edited) With your overcharging, did it affect your dash gagues? At idle my gagues are fine, as soon as i drive and put the car under load, the gagues spike, for example when I put the heater blower motor on or the wipers. I changed the coil and am still having the same conditions, so I can cross out a bad coil. I will try the ground today. If I have a 1 wire alternator with an internal regulator, if that regulator is bad would that possibly give high voltage throughout the system? Ricks 70 stang 13 Report post Posted April 25, 2012 The only gauges that work on my dash are the fuel and speedo. No i didn't notice any spiking of the gauges. I didn't drive it this way either. I heard that over charging was not good. Have you check the altenator out?
