Toploader linkage question

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

Figured I might sound silly asking this, but I'm having a heck of a time re-hooking up my Hurst toploader transmission linkage... I have a '69 Mach1 with a 390/4spd (with a Hurst competition plus shifter), and I took the engine out to rebuild it last year. The trans at the time had a reverse rod which had been previously broken (prev owner), and braised back together. Well, it broke again, and I've now ordered 2 separate reverse rods from Hurst, which are MUCH shorter than the old rod that was in there. I can't seem to get the thing hooked up to be able to shift into reverse. I've tried an extension to no avail - something just isn't right... I've got 1-4 shifting OK, just can't get reverse. I have the short "late-model" tailshaft, and it looks like the plate the shifter bolts to is the right one. Anyone have issues like this before? Any insight would be great - I just feel like an idiot!

Thanks,

Jeff B (Gilbert, AZ)
