ncranchero 0 Report post Posted December 14, 2004 I have a 69 that I'm interested in doing a R&P swap on. I found an article in the archives here that outlined this swap but some of the important links in it are no longer any good. One of the main things I need to know is which GM J-car to snatch the rack from. Anyone here remember the article or can tell me more about my intended swap? Thanks in advance, Steve BTW, here is the article. http://www.1969stang.com/articles/rack.html
bnickel 10,004 Report post Posted December 15, 2004 any j-car pretty much uses the same rack, but some of the cavaliers had a "performance handling" package that included a rack with a better ratio, like 13 or 14:1 instead of the stock 15:1. however you might want to check out http://www.randallsrack.com and http://www.speeddirect.com as they both have rack conversion kits that use the j-car rack and they are relatively inexpensive. around 1100 bucks for the randals rack unit and i think like 1200 or 1300 for the speed direct piece. i would recommend as they are both really well thought out conversions and unless you are an excellent fabricator with a strong knowledge of suspension and steering systems and have all the right tools, you'd be money ahead getting one of these units. i too had wanted to build it myself, but i soon realized that after i buy all the parts that would be needed and a welder and a few other misc. tools, it would actually cost me more to do it myself. personally i'm going to go with randalls setup. he seems to be a really great guy and will go out of his way to answer any questions you may have. ncranchero 0 Report post Posted December 17, 2004 I've looked at about all the rack "kits" and they're all out of the price range I'm willing to pay. It looks simple enough to build your own if you can figure which rack to go with. I have the welder and skills to make the brackets so no problem there. Sure would like to see those links and photos but I guess they're gone forever huh? Steve
